What passages in the Bible talk about abortion? What do they say about it?

Does anyone know about verses in there that directly relate to abortion? My bible doesn't have one of those reference sections in it... so can you help me?

There is one reference to it as deliberate attempts to abort children were not done by Israelites (nor did most cultures back then, they could offer unwanted babies to their gods as sacrifices and gain points, etc).

Exodus 21:22, 23 is where it is I think. It is given in the content of an unspecified number of men struggling and hurting a pregnant woman. If no fatality occurred when they cause premature birth, they only had to pay money.

If death was caused it was life for life, soul for soul....so however many lives ended (woman and babies), you had to kill that many of the fighting men who caused the miscarriage/premature birth.

It was also illegal to kill your children after birth by any means such as sacrifice to idols.

An unborn child is just as important as one born and their look, parts, etc. make it to the books up in heaven from which people will be resurrected during the 1,000 years. Psalm 139:16, Rev. 20:5.

  • The only accurate argument you can use from bible things is the commandment that "Thou must not kill".

It isn't murder, so anything talking about murder does not apply to an abortion.

If you want to really get on peoples nerves, there are parts of the bible that can be used in favor of abortion.

Exodus 21:22 (In modern day english) says "If men, while fighting, do damage to a woman with child, causing the loss of the child, but no other evil comes to her, the man will have to make payment up to the amount fixed by her husband, in agreement with the decision of the judges."

People are also killed in the bible when they kill a person.

Notice something? Killing a fetus is not equal to killing someone that has been born in the bible.

The bible pretty much treats killing a born person as a felony and killing a fetus as a misdemeanor.

Anything that talks about God knowing the fetus or about a fetus moving isn't an argument against abortion. That just says that God knows the fetus and that the fetus is alive.

If a woman has an abortion to get rid of her dead fetus, then anything that talks about killing doesn't apply.

If a woman has an abortion because continuing the pregnancy would kill her, having the fetus removed (dead or alive) is self defense. It isn't a sin.

Because the fetus always kicks the woman and puts her health and well being at risk, we could say every abortion is in self defense, which would make them supported by the bible. (I can't remember where in the bible, but it supports defending yourself)

There is no direct mention of abortion practices in the Bible. Modern religious grievances against it usually stem from the Christian scriptures' affirmation that all human life is sacred (made in the "Imago Dei") and is therefore innately valuable. Passages like Genesis 1:27-28, Exodus 21:22–24, Psalm 139:1-18, etc., are examples.

HOWEVER, there are early Christian writings (which had substantial influence) which address this issue directly. One of the most notable is the Didache, written around 70 CE: "You shall not procure an abortion, nor destroy a newborn child." (Did. 2:2) "Thou shalt not slay the child by procuring abortion; nor, again, shalt thou destroy it after it is born," likewise reads the Letter of Barnabas Chapter 19. Tertullian's Apology says nicely: "A murder being once for all forbidden, we may not destroy even the fetus in the womb, while as yet the human being derives blood from the other parts of the body for its sustenance. To hinder a birth is merely a speedier man-killing; nor does it matter whether you take away a life that is born, or destroy one that is coming to birth. That is a man which is going to be one; you have the fruit already in its seed." (9:8)

There are more. But you get the idea. The law of Moses held those who caused a miscarriage accountable, and Hebrew tradition affirmed the value of human life which has its source in God. Christian tradition picked up on this theme and, indeed, expanded it, seeing each individual as destined from the moment of conception for eventual perfect happiness with God, who is alone the author of life and its extinguisher as well. Because of this, Christianity has historically been opposed to abortive practices, but the issue has come to more prominence in the modern day obviously. Many churches are conflicted on how to react (Anglicans, Methodists, etc.) while others remain staunchly against (Catholics, many Orthodox, and others).

It remains a heated area of debate.

    Hope this helps.

yes abortion was known to Egyptian and there was a Number of recipes for abortion mixtures, the jews would have know of them

while murder is forbidden in the bible, the bible is silent on when a body gets a soul

the roman catholic view is that the soul enters the body from the first two cells this means that catholics can not use the pill, as the pill allows the cells to form on the uterus wall and then the wall expels them

interestingly radical Evangelicals are against abortion how ever they use the pill. As the roman catholics have reasoned either both are forbidden or none. The Radicals haven't reasoned this , perhaps its because creationism has destroyed their powers of reasoning, however logic appears to have deserted them

As others have said, there is no verse that actually describes abortion. However, debbiepi gave the most relevant verse. In that passage, we see that the life of an unborn infant is held to be equal in value to that of a grown man - if the man, during a violent struggle, causes the death of another man's unborn child, the punishment mandated is "life for life". This quite clearly indicates the value of an unborn child. (See v 22-25)

Note: some bibles translate this as "miscarriage" instead of "premature birth" - but there is no indication in the language of the passage that the clearly premature nature of the birth produces a dead infant (which would make it a miscarriage), and the *possibility* of death is mentioned specifically later in the passage.

There is no single passage in the bible specifically addressing abortion; however, Jeremiah 1:5 and Psalms 139:13-16 speak of Gods active and dynamic roll in the formation of the pre-born humans. It’s also worth noting that God prescribes a penalty in Exodus 21:22-25 that leaves little room for doubt to the fact that God considers the child yet to be born just as much human and the mother. We can also reasonably conclude from the same passage that the unborn baby, along with his mother, deserves his/her individual rights to life.

a number of have stated the verses in Exodus, which costs the unintended killing of a fetus a assets crime. on account that there is not any prohibition against destroying your guy or woman assets, there is not any longer something that prohibits abortion in theory. observe that the verse in Exodus directs cost be made to the *father*, no longer the mum. in this sense, requiring paternal consent for an abortion has a minimum of a few Biblical authority. (There are different verses that are utilized by ability of Christians to argue against abortion. there is not any question that the unborn fetus is alive, yet so are tapeworms. there is not any biblical authority for the view that the unborn fetus is a individual)

It doesn't...but it does mention miscarriage. It says if someone strikes a woman and she loses a pregnancy, they must pay her husband to make up for it. If the woman is injured, then they must pay a life for a life.(Exodus 21)

This implies less there is less value on a fetus than a human.

Many people interpret this as meaning the woman goes into early labor and the fetus is somehow delivered live, however there is no indication of that in the hebrew text.

I think it's just the fact how the Bible stresses that all of "God's" creations should never be denied passage into the world. That kind of goes along with the death penalty and how no life should be taken. (Although contradicted many times, lol )

I don't think it would be written in the bible. The technology for abortion (or the idea) wasn't really popular or common back then, so men didn't add it in the book.
