Car started, then stalled immediately?

99 Volvo

last night i went to start it and it started, but stalled.

Started it again, and it stalled again.

I got it started by using the accelerator

The whole ride home, the idle was bouncing between 700 and 900 at stops.

Why am I having these problems?

Sounds like a stuck EGR valve.

If you dont have a check engine light on, either your battery died or lost computer memory, it will relearn your idle but takes some time. If your check engine light works and is on, thier is an issue that needs taken care of and idle will never relearn.

verify the eec relay, the gasoline pump relay and the egr position sensor (if the escort has one) i'd commence with a sparkling tps and verify the mas besides. tps may reason that as can the iac, eec relay, gasoline pump relay, egr position sensor and mas.

i had the same exact problem before i had my car's carburetor all cleaned up from dirt and mud, including the gas tank. so have your carburator cleaned up as well, it will surely make it a smooth start! :)
