Chevy Cruze car... worth fixing or no?

I bought a 2011 Chevy Cruze last year in July, I was aware of some of the issues the previous owner told me, but it started having even more problems as months went on. I have gotten multiple things replaced on this car. New coil pack, new thermostat, new thermostat housing, new vacuum leak park, new MAP and MAF sensors, new valve cover, and had to get valve cover gasket replaced twice, new radiator hose, oil change all that stuff... it’s now leaking oil, has sluggish acceleration and it was throwing a P0420 code so I was getting told it’s the catalytic converter, or o2 sensor. I took it to a new mechanic yesterday, he’s saying it need a new valve cover and new manifold, and possibly has turbo issues and said it could need a new turbo or new catalytic converter, or both and could cost me $2800 to get all this done. The car does have high miles, it’s at 185,xxx right now. The mechanic said it isn’t worth fixing, and said since I bought the car for $2,000, it’ll be more money putting into it than what I bought it for. But he said my engine is great, so I’m stuck on what to do. It’s been hard buying new cars, but this car may have issues but it gets me anywhere I want. It’s been a good car despite the issues but I’m not sure if I should go ahead and get this all fixed, or just start looking for another car. He said the Chevy Cruzes don’t last past 200,000 :(

    Firstly I am going to tell you stuff you don't want to hear.   You went anal and bought unnecessary schit.

    thermostat& thermostat housing(pretty sure it was fine

    coil pack most likely fine. 150K is nothing. on a single coil for a v8 engine.  Valve covers is like the paint on the car , it COVERS. It does nothing else. They are steel or aluminum. You replace them when you want to change the painted one for a CHROME one...or they last the life of the engine.  If you are going to take it off then you are going to replace the gasket(normal).

    . stuff you needed to replace is rad hose - hoses last about 7 years. so OK So do V belts reliably. The one that turns the alternator behind the radiator.

    .MAP & MAF change OK It happens.

    ,Oil change is normal, also oil and air filter change.OK

    Leaking oil?  Take it to a manual car wash and blast the bottom of the engine clean with hot soapy water only.   Drive away.  Now find the leak.  Many change oil but do not put a new plastic washer under the drain nut.  You need that.(or aluminum or copper) Just say chev cruze to the parts guys, they know the size. from any auto parts store.  I had the same leak in my Honda.  Reason=No washer.  It is reusable.

    . Your new mechanic is SCAMMING YOU. Don't believe him for a second. He is just looking for $$.

    So far I have replaced the Vee belt and the oil pan drain plug washer and changed oil and oil&air filter.

    Maf & Map sensors.  I have mentally replaced 6 things.   Now fill the car up with gas and take it for a burn....stick it in Low and up to highway speed of 60mph for about 10 miles and then slip the gear into Drive and continue the burn for 100 miles so you are driving the car normally.  Then turn around and same speed back.   That may clear the PO420 code .  You cleaned out the catalytic converter of Carbon(due to short trip driving...which is REALLY HARD ON AN ENGINE.  It never gets hot enough long enough to burn out the schit.   "IT CAN'T HURT IT ANY"   

    Your cat is going when it sounds like a couple of stones in a tin can with a lid and you shake the can.  When you hear that, the cat is worn out.

    TURBO?  Your new mechanic sees you as free money for the taking.  Nothing wrong with the turbo.  The run will ALSO FREE UP THE TURBO so it works again.  It is probably carboned up.  I have run into that and it freaked me out when the turbo kicked free and gave my car a major BOOST OF POWER.  "Holy schit!"   Pedal to the metal going up a 3 mile hill.   If the car has been granny driven= short trips-then turbo has stopped working.  Driving it hard will loosen it up without damaging it.  You neck will snap back if it has a turbo.   No need for B.S. expenses. He is after your money.

    Your new mechanic is NOT A MECHANIC.  I been doing this schit for 45+ years.  I know what I am talking about. I may not know much about computers or Maf or Map(I figure they wear out because they are suppose to BLING)

    . You can do all the maintenance YOURSELF.

    I bought 1 car for $400 , 365000 with a broken odometer(it was not counting up the miles) so it obviously had more than that.  I fixed ODO and put a million miles on it with no large expenses.

    .The Cruze won't do that but quite possibly 350K+

    My neighbor, a mechanic, had a Cruise and he was working on it every week until he finally junked it. Wikipedia notes that the Cruise had the lowest reliability rating among compact cars. If you're able to work on it yourself, you aren't saving anything since that car will never be reliable, with one problem popping up after another perpetually. Tears for you.

    Sorry about your experience.

    It sounds like they have been simply trowing parts at it instead of doing REAL troubleshooting to find the actual problem.

    Aster that many parts guesses they have likely induced many more problems in the process.

    Looks like it's best to dump it and find a old toyota

    Like most clueless people who know little about cars, you're learning the hard way that you get what you pay for. It should have tipped you off before you bought it that a high mileage vehicle costing less than half what a 2011 Cruze in good condition should sell for was a time bomb.  .

    Everything you've spent so far is pretty much expected on a high mileage car. In the furture, one good rule of thumb you should remember is to never buy a used car with a turbocharger, especially if you don't know the previous owner and how they drove and maintained it. Turbos never last the life of the car (or even close) and they're expensive to repair.

    The next thing you should do is get a second opinion about the problem.  It sounds like your so-called mechanic is guessing. Find out exactly what's wrong and then make a decision.

    Call a junkyard, get it towed and end your misery.  You will eat and sleep better after you do this.
