question about dogs and human antibiotics?
my dog scratched his eye or poked it in a bush. Would it be safe to give him Cephalexin 500 mg capsule? He weighs around 20 pounds and otherwise is in good health. I have read that cephalexin is ok for dogs to have along with amoxicillan and also a few other antibiotics. I am just wondering if the Milligram is to high or can I split the pill?

He only needs an antibiotic if there is an infection. If he just has a scrape then he doesn't need it. If the scratch DOES become infected, you would need to contact your vet for the correct dosage. But yes, the entire capsule is much too high a dose for a dog. That's a human dose, well over 100lbs.

Never ever medicate your own dog unless y ou really know what you are doing ie an experienced vet nurse that breeds or a Breeder for a long length of time and in the latter case they would still ring the vet for the correct dosage as some human antibiotics can and are given to animals but it is the dosage you need to worry about which you are. What you are indicating is way too HIGH for the weight of your dog so all you have to do is ring your vet and ask simple as that.
If your dog is pug or nay breed similar to this wit potential eye issues get it to the vet ASAP as the consequences of early treatment will cause infection adn the possibility of removal of the eye.if only a slight scratch and no indication of any infection as yet it is up to you if you wish to try and preempt the issue BUT check with vet.

whilst the dogs and human drugs have a similar call, there is not any distinction. There are some antibiotics utilized in animals which at the instant are not utilized in people, yet for the main area animals an human beings use a similar antibiotics.

Don't give your dog antibiotics. A dog's body chemistry is different from a human's, and if you're not a medical professional you shouldn't try to prescribe your dog medication. If you're that concerned, take him to the vet. Besides, if it's not infected, he shouldn't need antibiotics anyway. Clean the scratch gently with a clean, damp cloth and put some neosporin on it.

Well if money is the issue that is keeping from taking her in, look for an out reach for dogs in your community. I live in Paradise Ca. and I have to go to Chico to a place called PAWS, check it ot. I personally would not mess with meds even if we are doing it for their good. Don't chance it unless a vet. tells you it's ok.
