what would cause a 1982 ford f100 to refuse to start if you 'don't" unplug the alternator wire?

it drains the battery if I don't unplug it (and then I can plug it right back in)

Sounds like the voltage regulator is sticking in the alternator to cause the battery to drain while plugged in.

    Replace the alternator.

  • i have a similar situation in my car, a pontiac but still a drain on the battery. it took a long time to figure out what was going on. a brand new battery, i have replaces most of the electrical in the car up to and including the regulator, here is what i found. with the key off engine off across the charging system fuse i had a drain, if i remember right it was 4 milli amps. over the limit. give that system a test and see what you find.

I agree, a short somewhere, get it to a shop asap and have it checked by a professional

Open circuit. Might be a bad starter solenoid also.
