Wire cutters are called dykes because this is their abbreviated offical name.
Offically wire cutters are know as DIagnoal CutterS. Take the DI from the first word and combine it with the CS from the last word to form DICS. When pronounced it sounds like Dykes.
Diagnoal cutters get their name from the angle of the blades on each arm. They are at various angles (pending which type you use).

On a Talk Radio program I once called myself a "f a g g o t." (The topic was homosexual bigotry.) All the dj's (5!! yes 5) froze, except one woman who sucked in her breath and said, "Isn't that a bad word?" I replied, "You can call me anything you want as long as you say it nicely." Millions of people could have heard me, but I don't know what the number of listeners was. However, the next day I was presented to the Mayor, who laughed, shook my hand, and said that had been a perfect answer. (He was, of course, a Democrat!!)
