What's wrong with our criminal justice system?

An article I read recently stated that the US imprisonment rate is 5 times that of other advanced nations. Either we are the most evil people in the world, or there is something wrong with our criminal justice system.

What do you think?

It pays to keep prisons full, when it's operated for profit. In my town the maximum security prison is filled with 80% of domestic or driving related offenses. They feed very small meal portions so that they can milk inmates on the canteen kiosk. They charge 30 cents for a small plastic spoon. You can by 10 for a buck in a retail store. That's just one little example.

How about marijuana laws? Why decriminalize it? The state doesn't want that, the judge and the attorneys don't want it either. Why? It's good for business because a misdemeanor can put you in jail for up to a year and a $1000 dollar fine. It isn't just the criminal justice system, it's our culture of greed, profitability and praise of the almighty dollar.
