compression problems in diesel engine?

Not enough information to go off of. Is it one cylinder, or all of them? Any way, To track down the problem I would get a leak down test. You can go to the auto parts store and buy a leak down tester, or take it to a shop. Leak down testing will pin point where the leak is. That is the best answer I can give with the information given.

do a compression check on the cylinder see which ones have compression then see if the valves are opening and closing on that cylinder if the not then it sounds like a flat lobe on the cam

a diesal engine works on compression almost 100%.
if you do have genuine compression problems its a sure fire
conclusion your pistons and cylinders need looking at above all else.
