For our UK friends - why does the Queen always carry a handbag even when she's indoors?

There have been a number of news articles about her handbags. One speculation is that it can actually be used to politely distance herself from people who try to touch her. Most people know not to touch the queen (unless you are the head of state then you shake hands). Occasionally people reach out to her, but her arms is safely holding onto the handbag by her side.

It's also rumoured that she uses it as a signalling device to tell her staff things she doesn't want other people to know.

I actually read somewhere what she carries in her bag, I remember tissues, lipstick, a powder compact, a small notebook and pen, and any important reminders written on a card.

Why shouldn't she,the men carry wallets.She has a cell phone in case of an emergency.

She has short arms and the handbag gives her extra reach when she wants to slap someone.

look at the size of the place she lives she would be constantly having to wait for the small things she needs asap at hand

Its a reminder to Prince Philip that if he says anything out of hand, she will hit him with it!
