Ideas to occupy recovering dog?
Hi
My 2 1/2 year old Saint Bernard is going to get neutered at the end of the month (overdue I know).
He has had major surgery before and I remember that when he was still housebound he got very boisterous and mischevous with the reduced excercise, especially when my other dog went for her walk.
Any ideas on fun games etc to occupy him while he's on reduced excercise. He's not very food oriented, unless it's fruit or carrots, it's all about the love. He is very energetic and extraordinarily clumsy!!!
Any ideas appreciated. I am taking a week off work to spend some time with him!!
EDIT: I should probably mention that I do not regard this as major surgery but that the last time he was cooped up for a bit he got bored. I am just going to take the opportunity to spend some quality time with my dogs for a week - a great idea I thought!!!!

Use the time to teach him a new trick, or touch up on his obedience training. Use fun toys like a treat ball or something else that will challenge his mind. The most important thing is to keep his mind occupied and exercised while you cannot do that for his body.
Take him for VERY SHORT, calm walks in your yard, always leashed, and supervise any interactions with your other dog.

Two of our Estrela Mountain dogs were neutered when they were older than that and apart from the evening after the op, they weren't on reduced exercise afterwards. We didn't take any time off work to be with them at all, we dropped them off at 8am and picked them up around 6pm on the same day and went back to our normal routine the next day.
In my opinion, if you make a big fuss of a dog over something so small, you are going to have a dog who is afraid of every procedure that a vet could possibly do to them no matter how small and simple that may be.

There's hardly any recovery time at all for a neuter, and a neuter is hardly "major surgery". The most you have to do is be sure he can't lick his stitches and the surgical area raw - other than that, no need to restrict his exercise after the first day (once the anestesia is out of his system).

Kong toys, are great at keeping a dog occupied. Get one of those, and stuff fruit, and carrots in it, he'll love it

Why take time off of work? A neuter is a very simple, everyday procedure. I always dropped my dogs off in the a.m. Usually they spent the nite, so we'd pick them up the next morning and go off to work. It's NO big deal. Don't waste your vacation/sick time.
