The Kennedy Administration backed the coup, but not the assassination. It is believed that JFK was distraught when he heard of the killings of diem and his brothers. A valuable lesson learned is that you cannot fully control groups like these. Whether you outright back them or turn a blind eye things can easily spiral out of control.
