How is it possible to be pregnant for 9 months but 40 weeks is 10 months?

I know they calculate from the first day of ur menstrual period? Why is it that they consider pregnancy 9 months but in actuality its 10 months. What am I missing?

    Good question!

I know you have herd the term "......while she was nine months pregnant" to exsentuate just HOW pregnant someone was.

Well.....your due date is actually the 1st day of the 10th month. You go through your entire 9th month....

yes, they start with your LMP to calc it but when they do an ultrasound they measure its size and might adjust it by a few days, or even weeks.

    But good question!

Source(s): Edit: .....it is NOT lunar months, or that you find out "after 1 month" or anything else. It is simple math and logic people! 40 weeks=10 months!!! Your due date is the 10th month...ask any doctor!! Thats why PREGANT people always go by how many weeks they are, but non-pregnant people always ask "how many month are you"...no one thinks about this until they ARE pregnant. Which I have been. Twice.

I asked my self that same question when I got pregnant. I guess it's just easier for people to say 9 months than 9 1/2 months or 40 weeks. They calculate by the first day of your last period initially, but often your due date will change after the first few ultrasounds when they can see the baby's growth. and make a better determination. My due date changed 3 times during my pregnancy. Congrats and good luck!

9 lunar months, but also 4 weeks= 28 days. Most months have, 30-31 days. So a month is typically 4 weeks, & 2-3 days a month. So you have to calculate the extra time in to add for the extra weeks, too.

Technically pregnancy is 10 months. They don't count the first month because of the fact that you count from your last menstrual period.

common mistake, pregnancy is 9 Lunar months which is 10 Calendar Months.

  • Each month doesn't have the same number of days in it, so you are really pregnant for more then 9 months.

It is because it is nine full months. If you only counted 36 weeks forward, you would enter the ninth month, but not complete it. You need to complete that ninth month. If you go past 40 weeks you are ENTERING the tenth month, but you are not pregnant for ten full months.

When you find out you are pregnant, you are considered 1 month already. It is 9 more months from the day you found out, 10 months total.

  • That's exactly how I feel! I am pregnant for the 3rd time and still dont understand that! I would love to finally figure it out
