Anything to help DOGS itching?

Our little blue healer puppy has a terrible itching problem! So bad, she's losing fur where she itches, it's scabbed, and she's constantly crying when she does it! No fleas, ticks, just a skin irritation.

Is there anything around the house to help ease her itching and pain??

(Due to finances, taking her to the vet isn't an option til at least later this month. So I need something quick!)

If she is itching to the point of scabbing I would definatley check into causes.

Lice are real hard to see but I would check her over carefully for those esp around the neck, ears and base of the tail. Tell tale signs are whitish grey nits, like you would see with human lice, firmly attached to the hair. Don't worry dog lice is species specific.

If it is lice Frontline plus works wonders. If your pup is over 12 wks you could try Adams flea and tick shampoo but NEVER use a flea and tick preparation a puppy younger than 12wks.

Mange would be another one that would concern me. These mites are microscopic and burrow into the skin & cause immense itching.

Revolution (from the vet only) is the only thing safe enough to treat pups under 16wks. Over the counter mange dips rarely work so that is something you would have to get from a vet if that is the route you would rather take. Personally, I feel Revolution is safer and easier. The only way to diagnose mange is to have your vet do a skin scraping and view it under a microscope.

A note, a mild case of fleas is hard to tell so I would check into that further.

Ringworm can also cause raw patches of missing hair & lots of itching. Again, a skin scraping is used to properly diagnose this.

Where is she itching herself raw? Are her ears clean with no odor? Sometimes dogs get earmites or ear infections that cause itching and discomfort in the ear and therefor are scratching at them all the time.

When it comes to skin problems there can be SO many things that can contribute. BUT when you say she is itching herself raw that is a reason for concern and a reason to take a trip to the vet. Esp if the reason is not obvious to you.

Is she clean? What kind of environment was & is she raised in? Where are you from? Is it hot? Is her fur thick? Where is she scratching herself raw? Even a vet could not help you with such limited information. The only way you can properly treat her is to take her to the vet. If you take a pot shot guess, there are some products that when used on her broken out skin, can cause more damage than good.

Good Luck and I hope you get your baby feeling better!

You can get a tube of Cortisone cream and put it on the affected area. Children's benedryl is safe for dogs. But do not give it until you call a vet to get the proper dosing for your dog's weight. The pet stores sell reasonably priced products to help control itching. There are also shampoos for skin problems.

However, if this continues as soon as you can afford it, I would take the puppy to the vet. You do not know if she has picked up some type of microbe or parasite. And I am sure you would not like to have an itch so intense that you scratched yourself raw and no one would treat you.

It could be allergies to her food. If her food has lots of corn and grain fillers(anything you buy at the grocery store) then she probably is allergic to it. Get her some high quality dog food. In the meantime, aloe will not hurt. You can also give her some childrens's Benedryl

Try Eqyess Anti-Itch spray. Its made for horses, but its gentle enough for even humans. It works well on skin allergies and hot spots. You can probably get it at any local farm supply store.

you can use spray deterant "bitter apple" from petsmart, they actually have three different flavors. my dog hates it and won't even lick something that has the spray on it. it's used a lot for getting dogs to stop biting themselves.
