The back of my mother's lower legs (calves) showed unusual discoloration today. Sort of like bruising?

but there was no impact. It is mottled purplish blue. Mom is 94, she is not feeling discomfort, her breathing and pulse is good. I have elevated her legs and put an extra "egg crate" type pad under that part. I need suggestions about causes and procedures. I never find that Friday night is a good time to drag an elder to the ER, but I have to admit this scares me.

A trip to the ER might be in order. This could be anything from the beginnings of pressure sores, to a thrombosis or an embolism.

If possible call your mother's MD's office, an answering service should pick up and you can have the MD paged, or if there is an emergency number listed on a machine, use the emergency number to contact the MD or anwsering service before pulling an all nighter in the ER. A two-minute phone call would not be bothersome to a good, caring MD if it is this important.

p.s. Sorry about the bad typing--I stink on laptop keyboard.
