How do I tell if a ring is real?
I was given a ruby/diamond gold ring for my eighteenth birthday by my grandmother. its very old.. my great great grandmothers engagement ring. Its in the original box i think. it says Theo Kartevold Jeweler 5718 fifth ave. brooklyn NY. I can't find anything about him. I was wondering if anyone knows how to tell if its real or if i should just take it to a jeweler. I dont want to seem like a fool if its just costume jewelry since its important to me.

Try seeing if it makes clear marks on a glass, or simply go to a well known jewelery place and ask them to inspect it with their tools.

i hate wondering this myself! i had the same thing something that was given to me and i was scared to take it in because it was important to me, possibly google characteristics of a ruby to look for to help you distinguish if its real! or you could take it in to someone..and say that its obviously important to you but you wanted to know the vaule...if you have looked up the jeweler then ...im not sure what else you coud do, but if it was bought way back, and it was passed down then the chances of it being real, is very high, because back then, flash and bling was important.

Going to a pawn shop is not a good idea. They are there to make money so even if your ring is valuable they will tell you its worth less so they can buy it and resell it. Go to a reputable Jewelry shop and have it appraised also check the diamonds out for serial numbers etched onto them

Take it to a jeweler. They've seen lots of items that aren't genuine and you shouldn't be the least embarrassed about it.

I don't see why your grandmother will give you a fake. However take it to a jeweler and ask.

Next time you go the mall, bring the ring with and have the jewelry store look at it. They won't charge for this service.

you could take it to a jeweler if it's that important to find out if it's real... if not just wear it i mean it's important to yooh so who cares.

Does it really matter?
It's not like your going to sell it on- is it???
Just wear and forget about weather it's real or not. :O)
