It means when a couple of people are leaving in a car, the person who says, "I call shotgun," wants the front seat. the passenger side. It comes form the military because the solider with the gun always sits in the front seat on the passenger side.

using shotgun purely means that you're using interior the front passenger seat. It became universal contained in the west even as lot of bandits could rob wagon-trains. noticeably those wearing both rich people or funds. So there have been 2 adult males sitting up the front contained in the wagon. If the wagon replaced into attacked, one guy of route could steer the horses and attempt to run away, even as the different guy replaced into "using shotgun" and capturing on the robbers...

It is the front passenger seat. In the old American west, stagecoaches often had a guard who carried a shotgun and sat next to the driver of the coach.
