How far should you be able to hit a 6 iron?

I was at the driving range, I am not a golfer, I hit it around 100+

Update:

What is the most important thing to be concentrating on during my swing? Keeping my head down and making contact with the ball? Thanks

I taught myself playing golf over 10yrs ago. A 10-handicap and I can hit my 6 iron consistantly 170-175 yards. I am 37yrs old, 5"6, weighs 155lbs. If this little man can do it I don't how others cannot. Here are the keys that helped with better distance and ball striking for me over the years of playing and fixing: 1st Key: Do not look up early and eyes on your target as you follow through the swing like a tennis swing. 2nd key: When coiling up, keep your head still and at release point, try staying behind the ball throughout your swing and "HOLD YOUR FINISH". 3rd tip: If hitting a short or long iron fat, move back 1 inch away from your normal stances and try hitting again. It may take a month or two to do it but most importantly is trusting your UGLY swing and don't give up the game ever.

It all depends on how strong you are and what type of swing you have. Everybody is different. One person might be able to hit those clubs further, while another person will hit them even less. Honestly, I think you're doing just fine. The best thing you can do is keep practicing and working on your swing. If you've only been playing for a 1 1/2 months, you really shouldn't be worrying about far you can hit the ball. Just work on getting a consistent swing down, and learning how to hit each of your clubs. Your swing is probably the most important thing in golf. It's not a contest to see how far you can hit the ball with each club.

A typical pro hits a 6-iron between 180-200 yds. Being that you are not a pro, don't be too discouraged right now. You should probably be hitting it closer to 160 yards as an amateur who's not overly serious about golf. Ignore anyone who's being an @$$ about how far they can hit it, and just focus on doing it a little better each time you try it. Typically the person you have to beat on a golf course is yourself, not the other guy, it's more mental than anything. Also as a side note, having worked at a driving range, the balls you use there are actually a softer core and covering than regular golf balls. In turn they react more to the inertia generated by your club so they actually go a little further than a normal ball would, chewed up or not they fly about 10 yards more. Again, don't get discouraged, just keeping working at it.

There is no right answer to your question but there are several wrong answers. Those claiming to hit a six iron 200+ yards are 'exaggerating' their golf prowess. Somebody said the pros hit a six anywhere from 180- 200 yards. That is correct. As a non-golfer if you can hit a six 100 yards you're doing okay. If you are interested in learning to golf, don't worry at this stage how far you are hitting the ball. You need to learn the fundamentals of a proper golf swing, practice, practice and practice some more. Eventually the distance will come.

    Enjoy.

My average for a 6 iron is about 170. My driver speed is about 106. The driving range balls are pretty used up so they tend to not go as far as regular balls.

If you want to increase your distance, get some lessons. You should be focusing more an accuracy than distance though.

    Pros...170 to 190

    Ams...130 to 150

Anybody hitting a 6 iron 200 yds is thinning it

I hit my 6 iron about 185. I am not a power hitter, but I can keep my irons safe and straight.

Distance is the result of technique, strength and control. With any club the object is to hit straight. If one has great swing speed distance will be more a factor than that of a senior amateur golfer. So regardless of the person, pro or amateur, accuracy and distance control determine the club to be used, the distance which is comfortable for the player and the hazards which are facing him. When you become a golfer and get off the range you will understand what has been said.

The easiest way to learn golf like a pro is by following "The Simple Golf Swing" program. It's primarily a 31 page eBook that teaches golfers how to make solid contact with the ball, how to avoid hitting fat, how to avoid slicing, how get more power, accuracy, and consistency in your swing. Consistency being the number 1 golf skill.

You not only get the eBook though, you also receive a ton of extra material including video, lessons on putting, driving, chipping, sand play etc. Here is their official site: http://www.golfswingguru.net/
