I used to have allergies and then I tried a product called OPC-3. It is an all natural anti histamine and I take it regularily and I haven't had any problems with allergies. It comes in a powder form and you mix it with water and drink it. OPC-3 also helps with arthritis and asthma if those are a problem too. With it, I would also recommend the multivitamin product because together they taste like a flintstone vitamin that you drink. (and everyone needs vitamins too) You can also register on the site and shop the partner stores (which are pretty much any online store you can think of) and earn points towards getting the products for free. Even then, if you take what you have spent on the previous allergy medications, you would come out cheaper by trying this. I use these products and I am very happy with them

That is a tough measure. Benadryl is widely accepted as the strongest H1 antagonist, which is why it is generally administered during anaphalactic shock. Unfortunately, it also has a broad affinity for other receptors, thus the drowsiness.
Loratadine is on the opposite side of the scale with highly specialized affinity but less antihistamine "punch." During the initial FDA review process, there was a comment from a reviewer that Claritin has only marginally better performance than placebo for moderate to severe allergies.
One of the best "in between" medications is cetirizine, or Zyrtec, which is now available over the counter. Again, drowsiness is always based on genetics and how they interact with a given medication. For my money, I would go with this one.
You may also want to consider supplementing with steroids. Sometimes nasal, inhaled, or oral steroids really help with mellowing immune suppression. Of course, antibody class switching through something like allergy shots is really the only way to totally desensitize an allergy.
