For Electricians. Electrical Problem, please help!?

I have a two story house and for some reason my whole downstairs won't turn on. The light switches don't work, the plugs don't work, but my upstairs bedrooms light switches and plugs work. I went to the circuit box and turned everything off and back on but the downstairs did not work. I know I need an electrician to find the problem but what could be causing this to happen?? What might I have to have repaired? I'm just getting an idea of what costs I should expect. Please help!!

make sure all of your breakers are on the "on" position. after that call an electrician. somewhere there is an open hot or neutral that might need attention.

It sounds like you have a breaker box as opposed to a fuse panel. It is important with breakers that you 'force' them into the OFF position prior to turning them back to the ON position. This resets the breaker. When you arrived at the breaker panel did you happen to notice any breaker that was halfway between ON and OFF? If you did then that is probably the breaker/circuit that you need to look at. So after you double check the breakers, resetting them and then turning them on, recheck to see if the power returns to the places desired. If it has - good. If not, then you may have to look for a second panel. Sometimes they put in a second panel when the main panel fills up with circuits. Short of finding a second panel you probably need to find an electrician, it might be that a wire has burned off or become loose and that is a job for an electrician.

Sounds like one of the main fuses is blown. It takes a volt meter to check or an ohm meter to check for continuity ot the fuse.

But you're right, if not familiar with electrical circuits, best to call a service man.
