Considering the way Hawaii became a part of the US, could the United States be considered an empire?

I just had this random thought today... What do you think? And, if possible, can you support your beliefs?

If you're thinking the size of a country makes it an empire or republic, you are wrong!!! The Roman Republic became a republic because it had a civilized government. It then became an empire because an emperor took control. The difference between the two depends on who is running the country. Obama is president and president is a term used in a republic so I think we could be considered a republic.
