Yes, actually. I heard that walking burns just as many calories as running.
Running just makes you feel tired as hell. Haha :)

After only 2 summers of running (5 miles 3-4 times a week) my knees are now shot. Walking doesn't do that, and it does make you lose weight. You do have to commit a bit more time to it to get the same gains, but you won't be experiencing pain from it years down the road.
The most crucial thing about losing weight is to balance the energy you take in in your food and the energy you use up going through your day and exercising. If you train yourself to stop eating at every meal JUST before you get that feeling of fullness, you will see that we all tend to simply eat too much. Put down the fork for a couple of minutes, then ask yourself "am I still hungry?" and most of the time the answer will be "no." That feeling of fullness takes a bit of time to get from our stomach to our brain.
Source(s): Have lost 25lbs with NO exercise except walking my dog, over 5 or 6 months by simply eating a little bit less at every meal. For over a year now I've been sitting at 125lbs, which feels 'just right' on a 5'5" frame. - 1 decade ago
Walking will make you lose weight any form of movement that you are controlling will just typing makes you lose weight but not a lot because you are hardly doing anything if you run you will lose weight faster because you are working harder than walking.

There are three main ways to lose weight quickly.
1) Use only water as liquid and eliminate all other liquid drinks from your diet. You must drink as much water as possible every day. You must drink about half of your weight. If you have weight of 200 pounds then you must drink about 100 oz of water.
2) The interval between the eating is very important. If you eat once, then you must eat next after 4 hours. You must take breakfast regularly. In the night eat your food three hours before going to bed.
3) Walking is very good. You must walk as much as you can. Walk everywhere you can. Use of elevators and escalators must be reduced and instead of these you must climb stairs more often.
These are some of the fastest ways to lose weight. By just following the simple steps, you can lose your weight very quickly. You must consult your doctor if want to change your diet or exercise routine.

-_- walking does NOT burn the same amount as running. If you run 10 meters and walk 30 meters, then yes maybe they do.
But jogging does so much more.
Also, you need a calorie deficit of 3,500 calories a week combined with walking to lose 1 LB a week. that means cutting 500 calories from your day to day diet
and thats with RUNNING.
walking however, does make you healthier and you make experience some weight loss but nothing miraculous.

any caloric deficit will make you lose weight...
the problem with most people is they get hungry after exercising...
say you eat a 2000 calorie diet, and you don't lose or gain weight... stay with that same exact diet and don't change it...
if you walk for 45-60 minutes per day, and you don't change your food, you will lose weight.
if you drop calories from your diet without exercising, you will lose weight
if there's a caloric deficit, there's weight loss
most people fail because they don't follow a certain diet (eating 3000 cals one day, 4000 the other, 1000 the third and so on) and when they exercise, they get hungrier and actually eat more. it's a combination of both if you know what i mean.
hope that helps

The diet is too much to handle becaue you're making yourself uncomfortable. If you make yourself uncomfortable with dramatic lifestyle changes, you wont stick with it. I think what will work best for you is one or two small changes at a time. That is how a lot of people do it. My mom used to be big as the side of the house and she started with small changes. First she gave up candy bars and after a week or so she gave up cheese burgers then after another week or so she started walking a little bit.... and just gradually keep adding those small changes. Shes fit now.
I think you could benefit a lot with some nutrition or fitness coaching. Most people need that because they want to change and have all the drive to do it and stick with it, but just don't know what to do or how to start.
Small changes make all the difference. I don't know what you do all day but one small change could be to just start taking stairs instead of an elevator... or if you have whole milk with your cearal, switch to skim or 2% just things like that. Or, if you eat breakfast as school, instead of having the biscuits and gravy, have fruit and oatmeal or whatever else is available that's a better choice. Or stop having ketchup with your French fries (its all sugar). It really does work.
I've spent lots of money on diet clinics and stuff that use drugs or put you on a really strict diet and the results never lasted because it was just too dramatic and I went back to the same bad habits. The only things that ever let to lasting resuts was the small changes that I stuck with... like parking far away from buildings and walking through the parking lot rather than parking as close to the door as I could... I've even joined extreme fitness classes like crossifr and never stayed with them because it was just too much all at once.
One thing you can do that you wont really notice is don't eat everything on your plate... leave like 20% of it. At the end of the month, all that food really adds up.

Walking, as long as you get your heart rate up, is a form of cardio that can ultimately help you lose weight. The difference is that you'd need to walk for a longer amount of time to get the calorie-burn you would out of running. Just keep it brisk and try bringing along some get-going music.
