Ultrasound investigation of the renal tract is often used to distinguish between various sources of bleeding. X-rays can be used to identify kidney stones, although CT scanning is more precise.
Per AUA (American Urologic Association) guidelines, significant microhematuria (greater than 3 red blood cells per high powered field) in high risk patients includes:
1) Upper tract imaging of which a CT urogram is the gold standard
2) Urine cytology
3) Cystoscopy
Note:- Urogram means a film obtained by urography. (radiography of any part of the urinary tract).
Descending urography/ excretion urography/ excretory urography/ intravenous urography means urography after intravenous injection of an opaque medium which is rapidly excreted in the urine.
Retrograde urography means urography after injection of contrast medium into the bladder through the urethra.
