In your opinion, is health primarily determined be genetics or lifestyle?

I live a active rural lifestyle (3rd generation farm girl) but eat lots of dairy from my own goats, meat, butter etc.

Update:

In addition, I do heavy manual labor - ie clean stalls, train horses, raise and milk goats, buck hay, carry feed bags, rake, mow, you know 'farm work'. I do take care of myself and try to eat at least 1 salad a day and at least 3 pieces of fruit. Cooked veggies etc. I avoid artificial foods/food color and try to avoid processed foods and I don't smoke cigarettes.

That is a brief windup of my lifestyle if that helps.

It is a combination of factors. However based on your lifestyle description, it seems that you are a hard working and clean living individual. I also believe in eating as close to nature as possible. ie, nothing wrapped in cellophane. Twinkies don't grow on trees, ya know?!

I think you are doing better than most of us. Not many of us live the lifestyle of our ancestors 2 or 3 generations ago. They also ate high protein, high fat diets, grew most of their own veggies and were certainly more self sufficient that we are today. My own grandmother was a farm girl and used to say she ate a dozen eggs and a yard of sausage every morning. She lived to be 104. I think you'll be just fine!

I agree with last answer, definitely both.

Your health can be determined by genetics - that being your family health history, for instance I have asthma, allergies and eczema, all of which I inherited from my Mother. This kind of inherited health is clear from reports of women who have multiple female members of their family and extended family who have had breast cancers also. However, the bottom line as far as lifestyle goes is that if you lead an unhealthy one - smoking, drinking, lack of exercise, poor diet - your health will suffer.

It's neither one thing or the other!

    Both.

I have a friend who is genetically disposed to being thin (and is) but she is incredibly unhealthy because all she eats is fatty, cheesy stuff with no vitamin content.

    Both,

Genetics have alot to do with it but you also have to treat your body right,
