  • Renovating a former dairy barn to horse barn?

I would like to know if anyone has tackled this project before?

We have a old dairy barn on our property that I have been toying with the idea of renovating it for horse stalls. It is set up as a milking operation with cow stanchions and a cement floor. It has not been used in many years. Currently its housing a bunch of misc. junk, tractor parts, old tools etc.

    So - my question is

First - is there a market for any of this stuff or should I just junk it

Second - has anyone done this type of project themselves or hired it out?

Happy to hear any helpful suggestions.

  • Back from the fair - just checking in...?

Hi folks. The girls and I are home.

Tired, cross eyed and yes, a bit cranky. I could use about 48 hours of sleep. All and all the fair was fun, but exhausting.

When the girls saw the trailer approach they made a mad dash for it and it was a contest of who was gettin in first.

If you have never seen a dairy goat run, its pretty funny. Nubian's have long pendulous ears and being dairy goats, long pendulous udders.

A goat at a full run will have ears and teats swingin in all directions. Mine also wear dog collars with goat bells.

    Clanging, swinging, squirting...lol!

Use your imagination....its funny. All we had to do is open the stock trailer door and goat mayhem and a resulting pileup ensued.

We were all glad to be going home.

I will write more later, when I am more coherent. Couldn't help but check in here first.

btw: whats goin on in y/a.?...I looked at some of the posts.

Is this place turning into a dog and pony show or what?

  • Updates from the Fair...and other fun pieces of information.?

Hi all. As some of you may know, I have now spent half my life (little over a week - actually, but feels like a lifetime) at the fair with my goat girls.

Someone please remind me next year not to do this again....well at least for not this long of a stretch. I have had to swap out goats 3 times so far. Guess the girls cant take the pressure haha!. so much noise, so many children, so many little hands, so hot, so dusty, such long days...etc.

Anyway I have met some very interesting folks here. I will tell you 2 short stories, but then I have to scoot. This is the big weekend with all the Holiday festivities and I can't wait for Tuesday !!!

I have been befriended by a family from France who are here visiting their family with another livestock exhibit. These folks are very nice and the whole family are sporting mullets. Yes, thats right. Business in the front, party in the back "mullets" Apparently they are all the rage in Europe where they are pronounced "moolaays". lol!

hummmm, I guess everything old is new again.

The next little story happened yesterday.

I was standing in line at the beer garden. Hot, sweaty, dust covered. Picking random bits of hay out of my hair and dusting off my jeans to the best of my ability. Goat poo on my western boots...waiting for that beer...

"hey cowgirl!" I hear behind me, I turn figuring they're talking to me. I turn and standing there is this tall hunk of cowboy with 2 beers and hes handing one to me. "Thanks" I said reaching for the beer. What events are you riding in he asks, smiling at me. Oh, I replied, I'm here with a dairy goat exhibit. He reaches out, grabs the beer back and say " sorry, I mistook you for a REAL cowgirl! and walks off !!!

    But...I sputter after him...but ... I have horses too......

    and he was gone.

  • Country Fair update?

    Hi Everyone!

I wanted to drop you a line from my time at the fair. This is not exactly a horse question, but you are the only folks here I care about.

I have a dairy goat exhibit going on for the next week, or until we collapse, whichever comes first. Its called the Joy of Dairy Goats. (ok you can stop laughing now...me and the "girls" are sooo tired already)

Our exhibit is part "petting zoo" the children can pet the goats and try their hands at milking and other educational endeavors

I was talking with another exhibitor today and learned something I have never heard of before. This person told me about the problem they are having with feral pigs. These are pigs that have escaped from farms and have regressed back into their feral state, apparently within one or two generations. They are aggressive and have been know to kill young stock including calves, kids and foals and eat them. I have never heard of this before, but thought it was interesting enough to tell you about.

Please excuse my rambling. Its nearly 11 pm here and I have to be up again in 7 hours. Hope to see you at the Fair!

Hi everyone! I just wanted to say hey and see how y'all were doing.

I miss not being here. We are just so busy now!

Between haying and our exhibits at the fair, I don't feel like I have had any yahoo time.

  • The stud's a dud.........?

A stud that has lost interest in his job.

This is a new one for me and I wanted to post it to hopefully get some insight.

About 3 months ago a friend of mine finally, after a long involved search found the stallion of her dreams. He is an 8 year old Haflinger stallion, with a show record and progeny on the ground. She bought him from a west coast farm. I don't want to say too much because it is a rather delicate situation.

She called me yesterday and asked me over to see him, so I took the 6 hour drive to her place.

She has had the vet out to look at him and says there is nothing physically wrong with him. He looked to be in great condition, in good spirits. He's nice, correct and friendly....he's just lost interest in girls.

I witnessed one of her foundation mares present to him, wink, etc. (basically act like a cheap date) and he just couldn't be bothered.

I have never seen a breeding stallion not interested in a mare.

The farm where she bought him from said they never had any problem with him and he completed his last season with them without incident.

What could be the problem? Any thoughts?
