I too have a GSD
He started of on purina as we know it costs a Fortune LOL
Anyway he is now on Skinner's Field & Trial the Duck & Rice Variety.
As you will probably know GSD can have sensitive stomach's so it is best to take the advice of your local pet shop, My local pet shops owner breeds the most wonderful retriever's and has his own kennels in the woods, we take our dog there as his kennels are so fantastic and the dogs have plenty of walks and care.
Skinner's field and trial is VAT free Too and a big sack costs about £17 - £22 they do a puppy food too.
MY GSD has never had any problems with the skinner's food and it is popular because it is not Basic and is good quality.
I am sorry to say i would not recommend the Wagg you are feeding yours at the moment Your GSD is growing and needs a better quality food.
Alternatively our old German shepherd who passed away at 14 yrs old was brought up on Tripe straight from the slaughter house, it's a messy job cleaning and cutting it up but you have one very healthy dog to show for it

This is a great question and you should do your research very carefully! Everyone is going to have their opinion but that does not mean it is the right food for your dog. I just lost my seven year old German Shephard to cancer and that is when I went searching for the cause. I came across a website on the internet that shocked me into disbelief that I probably had poisoned my dog to death and didn't even know it. Most dog foods are loaded with hidden poisons and other obsenities I still have a hard time grasping. I am going to give you the website address so you can read this report and learn what is really in commercial dog foods and you can make an educated decision like I did on which dog food to buy! I wish you all the best!

There really isn't a *best* dog food, as it depends on the dog. I feed my dogs Chicken Soup for the Dog Lovers Soul. It is a great food and my dogs love it. It is $32.00 for a 35 pound bag, which is cheap for a good food. http://www.chickensoupforthepetloverssoul.com/
Some good quality foods are :
Canidae
Wellness

Never get low quality foods like :
Cesar, Ol' Roy, Purina, Pedigree, Iams, Eukanuba, Science Diet, BilJac, Nutro , Dad's, Royal Canin, Mighty Dog
Or ANY grocery Store brand!
This website should be able to help you on picking out a good quality food. Stick on the 4-5-6 star range.

Never get a dog food with Corn, Soy, and By-Products. But I would also suggest a wheat free dog food. When you change your dogs food to a better quality, you will notice these things :
Firmer Stool, Glossier Coat, and better overall health.
Just because it says "all natural" doesn't mean that it's good. ALWAYS check the dog food ingredients!
Corn - A low quality filler that is in a lot of dog foods, most dogs are allergic to it.
By Products - Anything from Roadkill to euthanized dogs to cow brains! It does *NOT* qualify for a meat source!

One of the best readily available dog/puppy foods around is Wellness. This brand can be found at any pet store worth its salt. It is not cheap, but none of the quality foods are.
When choosing a puppy/dog food, look for:
- An identified real meat source as the first ingredient. For example look for "chicken", "lamb", "fish", etc. Skip anything that lists "meat" or any unidentified source, this can be just about anything, including dog and cat meat or road kill.
- At lease one more identified meat ingredients in the following 3 ingredients. These are often meals or by-products, which are fine, as long as they're not the first ingredient.
- No corn, wheat, or soy.
- No artificial anything.
- Made in the USA. (I think Canada is safe too, avoid China.)
You will not find a quality food at Wallmart or a grocery store.
Other good foods to consider are:
By Nature Organics, Innova EVO, and Canidae. .
Over priced junk foods that are often recommended by folks who don't do their research include:
Iams, Eukanuba, Science Diet, and Neutro.

I think that Innova is the best. Other good ones: Merrick, Wellness Super5Mix, Prairie, Solid Gold, California Natural, Karma, Healthwise, Organix, Pinnacle, Canidae. I don't know if any of these are available in the UK. In the UK, the only good food I am familiar with is the James Wellbeloved, Nature's Harvest, Fish4Dogs. I think that Arden Grange and Burns are also good foods. Wagg is unfortunately, a terribly low quality food.

My vet always told me fresher the better (which isn't rocket science) as canned and packaged stuff all has various things in them (toxins) that can cause cancer etc. I have always fed my dogs raw chicken wings or necks or drumsticks. It is only cooked chicken bones that can splinter and choke them. The raw chicken also helps clean their teeth. While a puppy the necks will be a good size, as they get bigger (if it is a big dog) move on to wings and drumsticks. they say to avoid the chicken carcus as it can cause problems in their stomach, although I give my dog the odd one of these.

Eubanka is what i use for my two puppy miniature schanuzer that are 7 months old. When i got TK and Theo the breeder gave us a bag per pup and we have used it ever since. They are still young so we apply a small drop of water with it so they get there water supple however when they were very young we had to mush it in. The breeder also gave us 4 tins of butchers puppy wet tinned food. Which they love. We give them 1/4 of a tin each with a small amount of Eubanka puppy dry mix with water and mush that in. Basically that's what we have kept them on and they have come on in leaps and bounds.
Hope it helps. But what ever food you change to, do it slowly otherwise your pup will get a bad upset stomach.

I buy my food directly from the maker. The best food to buy is the one with the highest amount of protein. Your dog needs the protein to help with its bones & muscles. It will also make sure that your dog is getting the necessary nutrients and will keep your dog lean and fit. I spend 13$ for a 50lb bag.

It comes to what your dog can handle, mine has a sensitive stomach so she was on eukanuba as a pup and now she's on nutro. but it all comes down to the dog. High protein for young pups is always good
