Private Pilots License Ground School Home Study Program?
I am about to start flight training in June, and I need to of course take ground school, which where I am going does not offer. I need to know exactly what is required in a home study program and how much it should cost. I know King Schools offers one, but its $600 bucks, and I know that there are other cheaper ones somewhere else. Thanks a lot!

You can do it the time honored old fashioned way - (Not to mention it will be a lot cheaper and will apply to the Instrument rating and the Commercial Certificate down the road).
Get a copy of the Practical Test Standards for Private Pilot. In the first few pages you will find a list of references. Many of these are available online through www.faa.gov You can also purchase bound editions are many major bookstores. Either way you have now started your personal reference library and you have everything needed and required for the ground training portion.

King School courses, as cheesy as they are, do an excellent job of explaining the concepts in a way that you're sure to remember them.
Other popular programs:
Gleim - http://www.gleim.com/aviation/private/
Sporty's - http://www.sportys.com/pilotshop/private_pilot_tra...
Jeppesen Online Training - http://jeppdirect.jeppesen.com/main/store/product_...
There are many other programs out there - just do a web search for "private pilot ground school".
I have never used a DVD or online training program, so I can't recommend any specific one to you, but there are some ideas to get you started.

There is no requirement that you EVER complete or attend ground school, let alone complete it before starting your flying lessons. You do have to pass the FAA knowledge exam (I still want to call it "the written") before going on the practical test (the check ride). Before you can take the written you need an endorsement from an instructor stating that you have prepared for the test. Completing one of the approved computer/DVD based training programs and scoring a passing grade on the tests it provides qualifies as adequate preparation, and these programs provide the required endorsement to take the written. You could also attend a ground school (rarely done these days) or self study, then have your instructor quiz you to prove you are prepared. You should study for the written while taking your lessons - not only do they reinforce each other, but the results of the written are only valid for 2 years. If you take the written first, and it takes longer than you anticipate to start , finish , or pay for your flying lessons, you might have to take the written again.

I used the King School "Cleared for Takeoff" course. This would also be needed if you train at a Cessna Pilot Center. Even if you dont go to one of those you can still use the software. I used it and was more than prepared for the knowledge test. It is somewhere in the neighborhood of 300 bucks and comes with a bag, some books, cd's, and a manual e6b flight computer.

You can learn everything yourself online. It's called google. Simply type it in there and read about it. Also try You Tube clips. Basically you can do it 100% free online.
