How is "water hammer" fixed. The banging noise you hear when a specific faucet is turned on?

I was told previously that because this was only in the bathroom and only the hot water it was simply the hot water making the cooler pipes expand and that it was nothing to worry about and nothing could really be done. Now, through research I am learning it is called "water hammer" and over time can cause premature aging of pipes, fixtures and valves. So what is to be done if it is just the hot water in the bathroom sink?

Update:

p.s - -this doesn't happen when the water is being turned off, it happens while the water (hot only) is running. And it is only the bathroom sink.

Here is a do it yourself idea:

I recently saw a cool little device at Home Depot that's for getting rid of water hammer. But it's for connecting between your washing machine hoses.

Here are some other places to get ideas:

ohhhhh, OK that's not water hammer that banging sound is caused by a loose seat washer in the faucet. It is vibrating in there and causing the action of a water hammer. You should tighten or replace the "rubber" (viton) washer that acts as the water seal inside of your faucet. If it is vibrating, it eventually will be damaged so you may as well replace it. Also make sure that you put in a washer on the hot water side that is for hot water. Some cold water "washers" will swell and deteriorate if used on a hot water valve.

Although the following page is for a leaking faucet, the procedure is the same:

There are two methods. One is to install an air chamber, which is a piece of vertical pipe that is capped off at the end. The air in this air chamber acts as a shock absorber. In the best case these air chambers should be assessable because over a long period of time the air can bleed out and once they are full of water they will not longer stop the water hammer. So accessing them to "recharge" them with air might be necessary.

There are also commercially sold water hammer arrestors.

You can get an expansion tank or you can buy these little air chambers that hook to your laundry hook ups. It just allows the air chamber to expand a little bit rather than hammer against the valve when you turn it off.

Try this though and you should be fine. SLOW DOWN. Turn off your water slowly. You are not in that big of a hurry that you can't take an extra half second training off your water.

NOW trying to convince your kids to follow this rule might be different.

no no no air or no need to call pro. It is a loose washer that is screwed into the bottom of the stem. Just turn off the hot and cold and unscrew the stem for the faucet. Look on the bottom of the stem and you will see a black washer with a brass screw going through it. Tighten it up. Then screw the stem back on and put handle back on. Good to go.

You probably need a water hammer arrestor- basically an air chamber that "cushions" the water in the line, they are often placed above the water heater.

Check to make sure if it uses standard type washers to ensure the washer is tight. Ive had hammering due to a loose washer.
