If you want to be an informed consumer, use your new computer to go on line and read the rental purchase act for your state. Almost every state has laws about how much an RTO store can legally charge. If you need help figuring it out you can email me at

Rent-a-Center should be called the Center of Last Resort. It does take advantage of people that have poor or no credit. On most items you rent from them, you pay 2 or 3 times the retail value of the item. Check out the price of "your" computer. I'll bet you can find one like yours for about $1200 or less. If your mom would save that $120 a month she's paying now at RAC, in less than a year she could buy you that computer. I'll bet her contract on the computer at RAC is for 2 years, so essentially she'll be paying twice what the computer's worth.
If you miss payments and RAC has to take the item back, you will lose the money that has been paid on the computer.
If there's a store in your area that still does layaway and sells computers, that would be your mom's best way to buy you a computer.

Oh Yes they rip you off!! My son bought a washer and dryer set a twelve hundred dollar one . They paid a thousand on it had money problems due to the holiday s they were two weeks late and rac told them they would pick it up until they could make the payment. yeah right they just wanted to get it back to resell to another sucker after they already paid a thousand no way. They are still making payments on it and it will end up costing almost three grand!! For a washer and dryer?? Save your money and buy one for cash. DO NOT BUY FROM RENT A CENTER!!!!

rent to own stores are not that bad. some people will say they prey on poor people, but credit cards must prey on everyone else cause america is drowning in CC debt. atleast with rent to own stores you know what you will pay up front, when you put something on credit you dont. (when figuring in the interest) after i got out of college i got a credit card 2000 limit on it, i bought a nice computer and a couple other things. if i had continued to pay the minimum i would still be paying that computer off. i have bought a few things at Aarons ( i think they are better then rent a center myself) and i was pleased with the price when comparing it to a credit card. rent to own stores have their good and bad sides but there are basically a credit card for those with lower income.

They don't really "rip you off."
They offer you goods at a price that you agree to pay. That is your choice.
They offer items to people that can not get them elsewhere because of bad credit or no money. They have to charge more to make up for all the people that don't pay.
If your mother is already having trouble paying bills then she should take that computer back and not put herself further in debt. You both will live without a computer.

In a way yes: You might buy a sofa, for example, and only pay $40/month, but you pay for 36 months and end up paying $1440.00 for a sofa that's only worth about $500.00
