Why are the pirates not considered terrorists?

Question

Just curious why the pirates that attack ships of any nation off the horn of Africa and take prisoners and property for ransom or even kill people are not considered terrorists, but are only considered "pirates". Now that they've specifically come out and said they will target US vessels, isn't that considered a threat of terrorism?  More curious than anything.

Its the any nation part of your question. 
Common thugs, robbers, thieves, whatever you want to call them commit crimes with no set purpose other than profit. 
Terrorist are more focused groups who have a goal in mind, as twisted and brainless as said goal usually is. 

As far as I'm concerned any person willing to commit violence on another (other than fighting for their lives) is a terrorist.

I dont understand what the reasoning was for not sinking their ships.

We have weapons to do it up close at a distance from space.

I mean if it was you father and he jumped off the ship wouldnt you run in and snatch him up, drive away and send a missile to the ship?

They are making terrorist threats and hold people as hostages why not call them terrorists they are threatening US citizens and others ...In my opinion they are terrorists...They are causing terror to those they hold hostage ...and thier families....Call them what they are Terrorists!!!

they're just "gangs" on the high seas...robbers...they aren't trying to harm our country or its citizens.
