My five year old stumped me...can you help?
On the way between churches on Easter Sunday, my five year old asked me, "Daddy, was Jesus the first person to go to Heaven?"
I haven't gotten a clear answer on this and am soliciting your help. Thank you.
I work as a paid soloist for one church and attend as a congregant/cantor at another. The drive between them is about 30-35 minutes. I was between them on Easter...makes for very unusual holy days!

Yes. Jesus was slain from the foundation of the world. He came out of heaven to be born of a virgin and crucified for you and me.
Also Christ is the first born of the resurrection.
Enoch walked with God and God took him, but Enoch was never buried in a grave.
Best answer for your 5 year old daughter is - Yes Jesus is a Branch of God and God has always been able to go to heaven.
John 17:1b-5
Father, the hour is come; glorify thy Son, that thy Son also may glorify thee:
As thou hast given him power over all flesh, that he should give eternal life to as many as thou hast given him.
And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.
I have glorified thee on the earth: I have finished the work which thou gavest me to do.
And now, O Father, glorify thou Me with thine own self with the glory which I had with thee before the world was."
Jesus always explains it better.
Every Old Testament person was in Abraham's Bosum until Christ came and took captivity captive and they went to heaven with Him. Jesus spent 3 days in the earth not only to get the keys to death and hell, but to preach to Abraham's Bosum. These Old Testament saints were seen walking the earth as spirits after the resurrection of Jesus by 500 witnesses.
This question came out of the mouth of a babe. My O My how our Lord works.

The most accurate answer would be no, because technically no one goes to Heaven (Heaven is a fictional place).
That said, as far as I know, in christianity the idea is that no one actually goes to Heaven while this world is still in existence. Dead souls are simply put 'on hold' (presumably not experiencing time) until the Rapture and Judgement Day at the end of the world. This would indicate that all souls going to Heaven, including Jesus, would go there at the same time. I could well be mistaken about this.

You've gotten a lot of good answers so far. No there are many people that went to heaven before. The question that hasn't been asked but may be on his mind is how did they go to heaven if Jesus hadn't come yet. The answer to this is that they believed in God and the Savior that he promised to send. Kids are so smart until they become teenagers that is-just kidding:)

It isn't really that hard. Jesus started out in Heaven, then returned once His mission here was done. There are others referred to in the Bible who were taken to heaven while they were still living (e.g. Elijah and Enoch), who were here on Earth before Jesus came, but He was already present in Heaven (in spirit form) when they went there, so the answer is Yes, spiritually, and No, in the physical.

Elijah went to heaven in a fiery chariot. Enoch went to heaven before the flood.
Jude 1:9 suggests that Moses was raised from the dead, and Moses appeared on the mount of transfiguration with Jesus; so Moses is also in heaven.
So, there were a few who have gone to heaven before Jesus lived here on earth.
But don't forget that Jesus *IS* God, and He is eternal. Jesus is the one who created this world (John 1:1-4,14) and Jesus claimed to be the Great I AM that spoke to Moses in the burning bush (Exodus 3:13-14; John 8:56-58)
So Jesus lived in heaven before this world was created, and Jesus Himself created this world.
But there were people who had gone to heaven before Jesus lived here on earth as a man.
I hope that answers your question.

Jesus is the first of the resurrection and our example of eternal life.
He was in heaven from the beginning. He left heaven to become a man and die on the cross for our sin.
Others went to heaven in the Old Testament. Jesus was there.

Here is an answer from the Bible found at 1Corinthians 15:20-23
20Â However, now Christ has been raised up from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep [in death]. 21Â For since death is through a man, resurrection of the dead is also through a man. 22Â For just as in Adam all are dying, so also in the Christ all will be made alive. 23Â But each one in his own rank: Christ the firstfruits, afterward those who belong to the Christ during his presence.
Hope this helps!

I love it when our children stump us. They seem to ask questions that we do not think about. I would think that all the people in the old testament went to Heaven before Jesus (Adam, Eve, Moses, Noah etc...)
Jesus was also in Heaven before he came down to earth. That is a really good question. I will have to ask my preacher.
