What are my odds of having twins?

My husband is an identical twin, and there are twins on my side of the family. There are twins on my dad's side, and twins on my mom's side.I'm nearly 20 weeks along and I'm finding out on monday if there is one or two babies. (This is my first prenatal visit... Don't judge, it's my decision, and 2nd pregnancy... Everything's fine!) But I just wanted to know if anyone knew of anybody who was a twin and ended up having twins. Was it typically the mother or the father? I know of a woman who is a twin and has twins, but never knew any fathers that were twins and had twins. This is a very long winded question, but I'm just curious. :) I'd like answers from people with experience if possible! Thanks for answering this silly question! :)

Update:

Well, this is my second pregnancy and I didn't show much until about 6-7 months with my first. I'm now 19 weeks along, and I look like I did when I was about 6 months along with my first. I've gained about 10 lbs so far... With my last pregnancy, I gained a total of about 25 lbs.

Update 2:

I just seem to be "sticking out" more. LOL! My first was a boy... Maybe I'm just having a girl! I'll let you all know! I'll find out monday!

The men's side of the family has no factor in twins. The only way it is genetic is if the woman's side of the family has a history of hyperovulating...releasing more than one egg per cycle. Unless you have that gene, then your odds are not all that big.

A friend of mine had twin a year ago now. As far as I know there aren't any twins in her or her husbands family. I have heard twin skip a generation.

Have you gained a lot of weight? Are you showing a lot? My friend was showing before 20 weeks. I am 16 weeks now barely showing, if you didn't know me you would have no idea. Also I have friends that are twins and there mom had gain 40lb in her first trimester (which i think is probably still a lot for twins.) My friend had gained 70lbs total, mind you she was tiny.

I think you would be able to guess by now with your size.

I think for it to be genetic it has to be on the mother's side (so you would have to be a twin or have close relatives that are twins). But there are lots of twins on both sides by the sound of it and genetics is a confusing science so I'd say your chances are as good as any ones! Congrats on the bub (or bubs!)

  • Twins usualy follow a genetic pattern i.e -> grandma is a twin, her daughter is not, daughter of the daughter has twins, her daughter does not.

Also it is determined by the girl side.
