Do you have any experience with the 300 Win Mag or WSM?

I'm looking to purchase a hunting rifle this next week end. It will be one of the two, but I'm interested in you personnel exp. with one or the other.

Update:

also, will a 300win mag fire a WSM?

300 win mag has lot of powder so kicks harder, short magnums are half of the powder than magnum rifles so has more lower range as well as knock down power,if you know what i mean.First if it's for long range hunting with a good external ballistics and a good knock down power at longer ranges then 300 win mag is easily beaten by 7mm remington magnum at extended range coz of less bullet drop at extreme range as well as holding it's velocity at long ranges. You can find any magzine published by ammo company and check the ballistic section and compare between these two calibers. Now i know a site i think magnum rifle holder should check it out.

The answer the the second question is no. But I prefer the win mag over the wsm because there is a lot more powder behind it meaning more knock down power at longer ranges. Don't get me wrong now because the wsm is also a good long range bullet, i just like win mag better. but both are equally suitable for hunting loads. in fact, you cant hunt the same animals with them, you just don't have the reach with the wsm as you do with the win mag, but lets face it, how often are you going to make a 1000 yard shot (unless that's your thing) when over 40% of the animals taken while hunting are within 200.

They're essentially identical in ballistics. Because of the design of the WSM case, you'd choose it for a mountain rifle but expect the possibility of slightly more feeding problems. Also, with costs going up as they are, the necked-down 458 would be a better choice for the factory load shooter, but if you're a handloader the WSM won't be notably more expensive to keep in cartridges.

In the hands of a reloader, both of these 300's become a do-it-all weapon. Either with full power loads is too much for anything smaller than moose, but that doesn't stop people from using them at full power to reduce wind drift shooting across mountain canyons at 100 lb goats or antelope at distance on the windy prairie bearing only 40 lbs of meat! But a good reloading manual can describe downloads approximating the 300 Savage for the deer woods, at sensible power and recoil levels. Use the 200 or 220 grain bullets at full power for any species of Brown Bear/ Grizzlies. Regards, Larry.

For 2 reasons I would go with the 300 WM over the short mag. It has more capacity for faster loads with the heavy bullets, more power to reach farther if you need it. The other is simply availability of ammo. Even if you load you may find the need for factory ammo at some point, and the brass is also easier to find for loading.
