How do i cure my guinea pig's dry skin?
i have two male guniea pigs, each about 8 months old. Both have very, very dry skin. When i pet them you can't feel it, but when i move my fingers through the hair you can feel scabs and dry skin. They squeak when i touch it. And sometimes when i pet them a tuff of fur will pull out with a small scab/dry skin thingy attacthed to the hair follicles. What can i buy or to to cure it? Thank you! Please no stupid answers like: put lotion on them. I do give a 10-point-prize.
Edwrad elric- wtf is wrong with you? sick freak.

Actually you have a serious condition on your hands what ever it may be. It could simply be dietary but to affect them that badly is serious and you are at the point of possibly loosing one or maybe both with out Veterinary intervention.
These symptoms can be the forefront of many things so you do need to see a exotics vet ASAP. As has been mentioned it could be mites scabies there is so many things it could be leading up to but the fact that they are in pain is telling us that it has gotten to a very bad stage and they need help. Please be sure that you see an exotics vet as they are trained to treat guinea pigs as general vets. are not. Guinea pigs have a very difficult time tolerating many medications and the exotics vet knows this. These babies are in a possible situation that they may need both antibiotic intervention as well as something for their skin so it is imperative to be working with a vet that know pigs well. A medication that will cure a cat will kill a guinea pig.
I do apologize if i have sounded harsh it just seamed the only simple way to talk straight and get the message heard, i hope i have been able to help in some way.
Because they are prey animals guinea pigs hide the fact they are not felling well from you, so by the time you can see it things are usually in the advanced stages so do not go beating your self up it is just one of the down falls of owing a guinea pig.

A mite similar to the scabies mite of people causes serious infestations in pet guinea pigs. Mites are microscopic, spider-like organisms that live within the outer layers of the skin. They usually cause intense scratching and significant hair loss. Some cases without scratching have been reported. Some guinea pigs are so miserable because of the infestation that their constant scratching produces serious wounds. They may run wildly or in circles, and occasionally even have convulsions."
To help monitor health, be sure to weigh your cavy weekly. A two or three ounce loss may indicate the onset of a problem. If your cavy has lost four or more ounces, see a vet immediately! A guinea pig that is not eating is seriously ill and must be seen by a vet for treatment and must be hand fed. Be observant!
Your vet should know that some medications that disrupt the intestinal flora, like penicillins, are deadly to cavies. Do not allow your vet to prescribe Amoxicillin! Check the Dangerous Medications list. If your pet is prescribed antibiotics, ask how quickly the medication should take effect. If your cavy does poorly on a particular antibiotic and stops eating, he may be intolerant to that particular antibiotic. Call your vet to discuss changing antibiotics.
If you suspect your pig is sick, it is always best to seek veterinary treatment. Your pig may have been ill for some time before the signs are noticeable. If you have one, bring a healthy one along for comparison, unless you have already quarantined the ill pig.
The above signs are SERIOUS and warrant a trip to the vet ASAP. As this list may not be complete, if you have any concerns, PLEASE, see a vet immediately.

ANOREXIA
Not eating is extremely serious, as your pet's system will shut down with dire consequences. After as few as 16 to 20 hours of anorexia, liver cells begin to break down and from then on, your pig will only get worse. If your guinea pig is not eating, get to a vet immediately to determine the cause and begin treatment.

buy some very gentle baby shampoo/conditioner combo and wash them with it. mine had the same problem. Also, try adding more fruit to their diet... it adds essential vitamins that add needed moisture to the skin, and makes hair healthier. The baby shampoo/conditioner combo is to get any dead skin off gently. Opt for ultra sensitive or hypo allergenic, btw. I hope this helps!!!
