I am a british citizen who has married a US citizen and I am curious to know if I should change my name on my british passport even though we are about to proceed with the application for my residency visa? I saw on the terms and conditions for the visa application I need to have a passport valid for X amount of months for my home country, but I dont know whether or not I should change my married name on my passport or not or just wait for my green card and apply for a new passport etc then...I got married in the US

My wife's ROC passport has always had her maiden name. The ROC government does not allow name changes (except in certain special cases). Her US passport has her married name on it (along with a new "middle" name). She had her married name on her green card. The only problem was if someone asked her for ID (like when we fly) she had to get the ID that matched the ticket. Other than that no problems. Taking your husbands name is more of a cultural thing than a legal thing.
Congratulations and Good Luck!
NOTE: US allows dual citizenship
ME = US & Irish citizenship
Wife = ROC & US citizenship
Also conditional green card is NOT the card you get for marriage to a US resident. Thousands of spouses come to the US as IR-1 visa holders. These people get a regular (10 year) green card.

I have to correct Javed. The US DOES allow dual citizenship. Go to the link I have included and see for yourself.

Also with a green card issued via marriage in the US is called a conditional green card. Meaning the reason you were issued a green card for the US is that you are married to a US citizen. After having said green card for 2 yrs you can then apply for the conditions to be removed. After they are removed your marriage no longer plays a role in keeping your green card. You could get a divorce and still keep your green card. After you have had your green card for 3 yrs you are then eligible to apply for citizenship. Just let me give you some advice however. DO NOT renounce your British citizenship. It cost $300 and is done in front of a British official and you will loose your British citizenship if you do this. Trust me, American citizenship is not worth giving up British citizenship for.

I would change the name on the passport before applying for the green card so that the name will match on all your documents. However, it is not a big deal either way..
