While I'm not sure why this is in the Religion section, I can say this: the domestication of animals was a great advancement in human society. Domesticating animals helped with agriculture, leizure, and sporting events, as well as travel. Domesticated animals became so popular, we never stopped using them. That's why we have pets at almost every angle of life.
This guy you speak of is obviously bias for dogs. There's not much reason for it I'm guessing. Just tell him that dogs are good too and ignore when he says pet owners are idiots...he doesn't know what he's even saying! People nowadays don't even think before they speak...or in this case, think before they type...

Gee you must think your pretty bright and no one will see through this allegory. This question has been asked far too many times and every time the answer is the same. But I will put it in the words of your allegory so that even you can understand. You don't have to like pets or even believe in them to want to discuss them in a debatable way. LOL same goes for religion I don't agree with it or believe but I still like to educate myself and try to understand why people believe the things they do. Or as in the words of your allegory your friend may not think pets are a good idea but maybe he wants to know why other people are so arbitrarily attached to them.

Is it because cat owners keep forcing their cats into his life? I can see where he's coming from. I mean, he has a vested interest in explaining to them why he doesn't want their cats around him.
Regarding dogs, I'm sure he doesn't find them all to be stupid. He probably just questions the intelligence of owners who think only their dog should have the right to play at the park.

Perhaps he has studied the various breeds of dogs and is able to answer a lot of questions on that topic while correcting the misconceptions other people there might have such as "poodles / labs / German shepherds aren't true dogs™".
You would be amazed at how many people claim to be "dog owners" and yet have never read the "dog owner's manual" or are just woefully ignorant about the basics of "dog ownership".

I would imagine he was pretty dumb. But let's suppose that cat owners liked to fly airplanes into skyscrapers and dog owners liked to blow up abortion clinics. Then he might have a point.

You appear to be yet another egomaniac who thinks R&S is only about her religion. Some of us are here because we are spiritual and are interested in religion. Some others are here to keep you people in check because you have a tendency to fly airplanes into buildings and bomb abortion clinics, not to mention burning witches and raping and pillaging indigenous cultures.
I believe that the spiritual pride that you exhibit is considered a sin.
