What 'classic' film should you really have seen but haven't? Or have seen but thought was overrated?

I've only recently seen 'One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest' but I thought it was absolutely fantastic. The friend I watched it with couldn't believe I'd reached the grand old age of 30 and had never seen it before.

I've never seen 'Scarface' but I thought 'Dog Day Afternoon' was seriously overrated. Similarly (though more recent) I thought 'Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind' was utter rubbish. I liked the general idea behind it but after about 20 minutes it just bored me.

What 'classic' film should you really have seen but haven't? Or have seen but thought was overrated?

Thanks in advance :)

Well a REALLY OLD Classic that I think I should see and really want to see is "12 Angry Men". One that I HAVE seen is "To Kill A Mockingbird" and I thought it was fantastic...one of my favorite films even. Ummm....I found "Citizen Kane" to be alright, though I understand that it was a film unlike any other during the time of its release. I, for one, thought that "Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind" was excellent. Strange, certainly, but excellent all the same. That's just me though. I've seen "Goodfellas", "Fight Club", and "Donnie Darko" (all of which can be considered as "classics") and I loved them all. I actually still haven't seen The Godfather, believe it or not, and intend to see it sometime soon. I also haven't seen Pulp Fiction and want to see that one as well.

I've not seen Casablanca, One flew over a cuckoo's nest, Grease, the sound of music or the Godfather films.

    I've never wanted to!

I've seen An eternal sunshine of a spotless mind and thought it was ok, but a bit too long.

Out of all of those films I have only seen one flew over the cuckoo's nest and I really loved it too..... I haven't seen many of the good old classics, if I get the time I might watch some you never know....

I've seen many of the "classics" and to be honest there aren't that great. We put a premium on the originals. I myself find SOME (not Malibu's Most Wanted, etc.) modern films to be some of the best ever created.

I haven't seen On the Waterfront yet, but it's next on my list.

As far as overrated, I don't get putting Singing in the Rain anywhere in a top ten list but it has scored that honor on both of AFI's top 100 movies list (98 and 07). It's not even my favorite musical. I do enjoy it, but one of the greatest movies ever made? huh?

I haven't seen Gone With the Wind and I am a female who used to take cinema classes. It is one of the first classics. I saw Taxi Driver and Pulp Fiction and was expecting to hate them, but they were actually quite good. I saw Titanic the other week and couldn't believe how it disappointed me.

Never seen Clockwork Orange or The Exorcist

I've never seen any of The Godfather films and I really have no desire to. I saw Apocalypse Now a few years ago because everybody said I had to.... but I thought it was just really boring.

I haven't seen Gone With the Wind -- and I feel like I ought to since I was a film major....

I thought Casablanca was going to be one long cliche because it's been homaged and sent up so many times, but I found myself liking it in spite of this. (The "Marseillaise" scene brings me nearly to tears every time.)

And Magnolia got cheers from critics and boos from real people, so I was inclined to think I wouldn't like it, but I really enjoyed it.

I make it a point to see films that I am "supposed to see" as a film buff, movie fan or whatever I am. I look up different lists like, the greatest films of all time and 101 movies to see before you die. This means I have to watch all kinds of films whether I think I will like them or not. I have to watch foreign films, indie movies and movies from categories I may not like very much, like chick flicks or romances. I think it has really opened me up and I can enjoy a 70 year old movie as much a new movie. Thanks to Netflix, no classic movie remains on my "should have seen" list for very long
