Blue Buffalo food gives my dog diarrhea!?

Okay, so I have a great dane who is 7 months old. He was eating Eukanuba but after some research and finding out what exactly is in it we switched to Blue Buffalo Large Breed Puppy Food. The only problem now is, his stool is always very soft and most the time very runny as well. We took a sample to the vet and there are no parasites or anything else that could cause his diarrhea so we know it's the food. Is it possible that just switching to the adult formula could fix this? I know that this food is very rich, I'm tempted (against my own wanting to) to go back to Eukanuba just because he seemed more consistent on it. I don't know what to do... help?

Update:

we switched gradually. i know all about that, we kept him on a mixture of both his eukanuba and slowly filtered in more and more of the blue buffalo over a course of three weeks, now he's just on the blue buffalo and it's baaaddd...

Update 2:

i guess, i'm not asking about how to switch foods, i know how to do that. i'm asking if anyone else has had this issue with this brand of food and what they did? :/

There are better brands out there to avoid going back to Eukanuba. Yes I agree with you that it's the food, just because the food is better doesn't mean it's best for your dog. I feed Taste of the Wild, it's a very high quality food that is reasonably priced, it has no grains and no by products. You cannot find this food in Petsmart or Petco you'd have to locate this food at a specialty pet store, it has over 4% fibre which will help to harden your dogs stool. However, my dog didn't do well on the Bison and Venison version of TOTW because she doesn't do well on red meat and was getting diarrhea, so I switched flavors in the same brand and she is doing so much better on the food now. So you can do one of two things, switch to a different "flavor" of Blue Buffalo (no you don't have to do this gradually) and see if maybe he does better on a different flavor, and if he doesn't keep changing flavors until you find one that works for him. If that doesn't work you can switch to another high quality food such as Pinnacle, Taste of the Wild, Solid Gold, Wellness CORE, etc and see if that helps.

When it comes to dog food it's all on what your dog thrives on and not what's best for him. Just because someone says it's good doesn't mean it'll work with your dog, it's all trial and error when it comes to dog food and you have to switch a few times before you find something that's high quality and works well with your dog.

    Good luck

I tried Blue Buffalo with my dogs and did not have success either. My lab mix has allergies and this food just made those worse. She was so bad I had to give her a benedryl for a couple of days while switiching to another food. My boxer ate it for about a week and then went off it all together. She hated the little black bits.

I would suggest you try another brand of food. Good ones are Taste of the Wild and AvoDerm. I've also heard that the Chicken Soup brand is good too.

Good luck, I know how fustrating this can be.

Exactly the problem that we are having. I slowly introduced the Blue Buffalo and everything was fine. Then I went to 100% and now have diarrhea. Am thinking of just going back to a mix with the old food. Maybe she'll get the benefit of both?

Some dogs simply do better on different types of food -

that being said - since the puppy was eating Eukanuba his intestinal flora are only used to dealing with that - the way to help ease the transition is to give some live culture yoghurt mixed with some acidophilus which will help get his intestines back on track.

Blue Buffalo is one of the few high quality foods I've never given (I give kibble as treats/training aids but primarily raw feed as I find it much cheaper and healthier than kibble) I'd recommend you try something like Natural Balance Ultra Premium - All life stages.

The reason it gives diarerreha is cause its rich you can NOT switch all at once you have to mix with yr old food Also the person saying there are better foods no this is a 5 star rated food

  • The body too quickly switched to another food. And diarrhea, from something like this, means the body is trying to adjust to this new food

hmm, than maybe you should stick with the food that gave your dog solid stools, and that makes you feel comfortable. Not that eukanuba is the best, or healthiest brand, but what ever your dog is best with.

Every dog needs some type of training. The first class I ever took a dog to was https://tr.im/rn8fI

It's a very basic kind of class. They will help you with your dog, and show you how to work with your dog at home.

They'll also answer any questions you have about your dog's particular problems and how to handle them. The most important thing in dog training is to be consistent and work with your dog at home on the lessons. The PetSmart class teaches sit, down, come, and the very basics every dog needs to know. They will also help socialize your dog. You are unhappy with an untrained dog, and believe it or not, the dog is actually unhappy to. You need to take your dog now, as the older he gets, the harder it will be to correct your dog's bad habits. Plus the classes are fun for you and your dog. My dog went from that first PetSmart class on to advanced obedience classes. You might also contact your local humane society. The one in my area offers obedience classes with a very good trainer at a reduced price.

Some dogs just don't do well on the high protein so called "holistic" dog foods, just how some dogs don't do well on the so called "crappy" foods which really are not crappy.

Gradually switch him back to Eukenuba. I mean having loose stool all the time is not good. Its better that he is on a food that keeps him healthy. And loose stools are not healthy.

The problem i see with the "holistic" foods is many generally have very little fiber source, because apparently fiber sources are bad. Well they are not bad thats why dogs have loose stools on this food cause there is little to no fiber.

I gradually introduced the BB Fish formula for large breed dogs. She is half way through her 3rd 50# bag. She has diarrhea everyday and terrible fish scented gas!
