why do hungry kids have pot bellys?

It's called a distended abdomen (swollen belly) and it's a result of bloating. When a person goes too long without food (this can happen in the case of anorexia too), the abdominal cavity fills with gas and water. It's a side effect of a lack of food. This occurs mostly in children, but can also occur in adults.

Wow...I thought that maybe our country had some hope for its insensitivity and ignorance but you have proved otherwise. I'm sorry to throw out all of these vocabulary words but I guess the Billy Bob School of No-Class didn't teach that!!! The kids on the Sally Struther's shows have distended bellies, a common side effect of starvation. Most people learn that early on, but I'm guessing that you learned how to spit tobacco and shoot possums. Have a nice day!

Children in 3rd world countries do not have the medical resources and access as other countries and they have no food and lack vitamins and minerals. So this swollen stomach is due to protein and vitamin B deficiency, they have enlarged livers and free fluid (ascites) in the peritoneal cavity.

it's bloated, because of malnutrition. What makes it bloated, I don't know.

Well,they eat things out of the garbage sometimes and they have tapeworms and other things on the old oranges or wat ever they eat that could extend your belly!
