Name as many ways possible a batter can reach first base?
I can come up with 9 ways. How many can you name.
Now I think of it 10, be specific, dont allow this to be too hard of a question
very good 23 ways, everyone forgetting one more, happens when first base is open?
Someone has a rule book and can name all of them, this something my dad drilled me on but that was back 20 or more years, I can only come up with 10.
1) Base Hit
2) Walk
3) Intentional Walk (not the same)
4) Hit by pitch
5) 3rd stike dropped ball
6) pitchers balk (first base open)
7) error
8) Catchers interferrance
9)Umpire interferance
10) fielders choice
pitchers balk, this is getting less and less commonly called, pitchers have many pitching approaches so long as pitcher uses same delivery its not a balk, but technically if he starts his pitching motion then stops without stepping off the rubber or continueing his motion towards homeplate throwing the ball or not this is a balk, with first base open batter is awarded first base.
This rule been overlooked for years. especially in mlb

Um that pitcher's balk rule has been overlooked because it does not exist! A batter is not awarded anything for a pitcher's balk. A balk is intended to prevent the pitcher from deceiving a RUNNER. A balk awards each runner 1 base. In MLB a balk is not a dead ball, however NFHS (high school) a balk is a dead ball. If there are no runners on base, a pitcher can be called for an illegal pitch, however, this does not award first base to the hitter, only a ball. The ONLY way a batter can be awarded first base on an illegal pitch is if there were already 3 balls on the batter.
By the way, contrary to what another poster said, ALL balks are not committed by the pitcher. The catcher can indeed cause a balk by having one or both feet outside of the catcher's box when the pitch is delivered. This still does not impact the batter though.
Edit: Also, umpire interference is NOT a way for a batter to reach first base. Umpire interference occurs when the umpire interferes with the catcher making a throw. This has no impact on the batter and thus the batter cannot reach first base by umpire interference. If you are referring to a fair ball hitting an umpire, this is NOT called umpire inteference as the umpire is part of the playing field so it is just a single.
Edit 2: I forgot to answer the question! There are only 8 anything else you name falls into one of these categories.
1. Hit
2. BB
3. Obstruction
4. Catcher's Interference
5. Error
6. Hit By Pitch
7. Fielder's Choice
8. Dropped Third Strike
Passed Ball and Wild Pitch are not ways to reach first base. A batter will only reach first base due to a passed ball or wild pitch if it is ball four (BB) or a dropped third strike.
Runner Interference is not one because the batter is awarded a Hit.

It would be helpful for you if you actually knew the rules before spouting nonsense about a "pitcher's balk." All balks are committed by the pitcher. He's the only player who can balk. And under no circumstances does a balk result in the batter being awarded first base.
The ways for a batter to reach first base are:
(1) Base hit
(2) Base on balls
(3) Hit by pitch
(4) Error
(5) Fielder's choice
(6) Interference
(7) Obstruction
(8) Wild pitch
(9) Passed ball
A base on balls is a base on balls. It doesn't matter whether it was intentional or not.
Umpire's interference is a base hit. This occurs when a fair batted ball hits an umpire before passing a fielder other than the pitcher.
"3rd strike dropped ball" would be a passed ball. You don't reach base on a strikeout; you reach on either a passed ball or wild pitch, whichever the scorer rules.
If you don't know the rules, please refrain from answering.

1. Hit
2. Error
3. Dropped Third Strike
4. Walk
5. Fielder's Choice
6. Hit-by-Pitch
7. Pitcher Exceeds the 21 second rule (or whatever they did to speed up the game.)
8. Pitcher defaces the ball
9. Catcher's interference
10. Spectator's interference if the umpire believes he would have reached first
11. If the ball gets lodged into the catcher or umpires mask on third strike
12. Fielder's Interference (obstructing a batter from running the baseline.)
A lot of this can be scored differently so there are a lot more ways if you for instance, count a wild pitch and a passed ball as being different on third strike.

EDIT: If intentional walk isn't the same as a walk, a single through the middle, a single in the gap, a bunt single, etc. are not the same. They are kept seperate stats, but in the MLB rule book they are defined as the same thing. Catchers Interference is the same as Fielder's Interference, and there's never been an umpire's interference. A pitcher can only balk with runners on base, and a batter is never affected by a balk. Therefore, the seven answers I have below are the only correct ones.
Hit By Pitch
Walk
Hit
Error
Fielder Interference
Fielder's Choice
Dropped Third Strike
I don't know that there are any more. I believe catcher interference is the same as fielder interference. What are the other two you have?
- 1 decade ago
1. hit
2. walk
3. hit by pitch
4. reach base on error
5. third strike is not caught and thrown to first base before runner reaches first base
6. catcher's interference (happened in Mets-Cardinals game tonight)
7. fielder's choice
8. fielder's obstruction
9. sacrifice*
*some consider as fielder's choice
There are also about 15 misconceptions (see source below).
- 1 decade ago
1.Hit
2.Walk
3.HBP
4.Error
5.Fielders Choice
6.Catchers Interference
7.Drop 3rd Strike
- 1 decade ago
single, double, triple, homer, walk, hit by pitch, dropped 3rd strike, ground ruled double(ball hitting fair and bouncing over fence),pinch runner, fielder's choice, bunt(which is technically a single but a different way to reach base as opposed to a ball hit past the infield)

Probably won't get 9 but we'll see.
1.Hit
2.Walk
3.Hit by pitch
4.error
5.fielders choice
6.dropped 3rd strike
Thats all I can come up with at the moment. 9, really?
