Do people who believe in God appreciate Earth Day?

Is Earth Day just a bunch of hype from tree hugging Liberals, or is it really up to everyone to be more responsible about keeping the earth the way it has been, and not some big barren pile of garbage and deserts like Mad Max... if that would ever happen.

I'm curious what those who say God is responsible for everything that happens (in God's hands, fate, God's will, etc...), if that means it is okay to pollute, because nothing will ever happen unless it is what God wants/intended, etc?

Why do we even have Earth Day, many people think it is a crock. The earth will take care of itself (whether that has to do with God or not right?).

Man can't affect the biology of the planet, climate, etc... Or maybe we can.

So I'm just curious, are you religious, and what is your take on Earth Day... thanks

Update:

Barley into this and already a ton of rather interesting answers... I'm surprised with some answers, but I find it really impressive just how differently so many people think about this subject... from belief in God, Christianity but still feeling people have some responibilities to caring about the planet, and other people who for example, also believe in God, are Christian, but subsribe to the idea, the main reason it is ridiculous to care about all this green movement stuff... is quite simply because, what happens to us, and the planet, is in God's hands, not ours...

Then of course every other opinion here.

I wonder if other religions have the same sort of conflicting views as this.

But it does appear so far in survey, that mostly those who seem to wane away from 'The Rapture' per-say, whether otherwise religious or not, seem more inclined to care about the future of earth (and perhaps mankind). Could that be an accurate assement?

In any case, interesting, glad I asked.

I am a Christian and I believe in God and I do not like the idea of Earth day. Yes God created the Earth and some will say it was a gift. I do what I can by treating it right. But I am not going to turn in my diesel truck for a hybrid piece of crap. Companies wanting to conserve energy to save money is fine with me and an excellent idea. But trying to go completely green so it doesn't hurt the atmosphere? Give me a break.

No God is not responsible for what we have done to the earth. The messes we are in are due to our free will. Earth day's intent was to be more aware of what we were doing to slowly destroy the Earth, but like everything else it became a controversy and someones political agenda. I could say that overall it is a crock because in the end God fixes it, yet I don't have a popular view on things on here, so I can only agree on some of what you said. Which is I don't think all of God's people will participate on Earth Day. And neither will anyone who does not believe it will help solve any problems.

Funny that you ask, my feelings towards earth day or "go green" is a bit conflicted and contradicted.

You see, from the bible, when Jesus comes back, God will destroy the earth anyway, so how we act on "green" doesn't prolong or preserve the earth as God has the final say and WILL come back to defeat Satan and death.

If you want to go green because it makes the air cleaner so that your children or other people will breath healthier, that's fine. We should treat our neighbors the way we treat ourselves. However, if you go green because you think that can preserve the earth and maybe more resources for the future, then remember that God has the final say and will destroy the wicked earth that we live today.

Whether we go green or not isn't relevant, Jesus will come back!

I'm very religious, but I'm Forn Sed, a type of Nordic heathenism, not a christian. We take our responsibility toward the earth and the environment very seriously. We like Earth Day because at least a few people who wouldn't ordinarily think about such things as composting and recycling - things we do automatically - suddenly pay a bit of attention.

In my faith, Midgard, the realm we live in that includes the Earth, was a GIFT to us from the Gods themselves. They expect us to care for it as one would care for any other precious, living gift. We do view the Earth and everything in it as a living entity, so we tend to be very mindful of our actions toward our planet.

I smoke Kool Menthol cigarettes... everytime i finish a pack i litter them out of my truck window because the pack is green in color... therefore everytime i litter i am helping to "make the earth more green" since that seems to be the hip thing to do lately.

  • Why wouldn't they? People who believe in God are likely to look upon the Earth as God's gift to mankind.

Don't you appreciate the gifts you've been given?

I'm a Christian and try to do my best to save the environment.

I have my own big linen shopping bags so that i wouldn't have to use plastic ones every time i go grocery shopping :)

  • God has given us this great green Earth, so it is our job to protect it, regardless of religious beliefs or lack of.

Rev 11:18 And the nations were angry, and thy wrath is come, and the time of the dead, that they should be judged, and that thou shouldest give reward unto thy servants the prophets, and to the saints, and them that fear thy name, small and great; and shouldest destroy them which destroy the earth.
