Is getting your wisdom teeth pulled bad?
So, I just found out this morning that I have to get my wisdom teeth cut out. I only have two to begin with, both on my right side. They are both impacted and my lower tooth has a cyst underneath it.
All day I've been like, eh okay. It's all good. I googled it and it sounds like bad news. I tried to watch a surgery and I couldn't make it through. I already know that they're gonna have to knock me out for this. It seems soooo gruesome and so painful. It's going to cause me not to play hockey for a while. :(
I'm going to the oral surgeon next Friday. Is this something that I should be terrified about? How do I deal with being afraid of this? Anybody have any experience? What was it like just after wards, and during recovery? I'm really nervous about it. I've never been put under before, let alone have surgery and cut open. :(...
My Mom is going to come with me. I also have severe anxiety, so I take Ativan as needed. I don't know if that would mess anything up if I took it before the surgery or not?

i am the worlds biggest chicken when it comes to anything dental but really i found out lately i was being so stupid. First of all be glad they are putting you out you wont know a thing! which is good. I had mine out in the dentist office monday under gas and shots. It was really not that bad. And i am a huge chicken. Mine werent impacted though. its been 3 days and except for a little swelling in my cheeks i havent had any pain really. At least nothing some tylenols wount solve. You will be fine and Dont watch anything about it online. In fact i wouldnt look up anything else. Just wait till your appt and let the pro's take care of you! Be sure and tell your dr about the anxiety meds you take just so it wont interact with the medicine they give you that day. ..
Youll be be fine and will be so glad once its over! trust me..better to get it over with now than later on when they are causing lots of trouble.
good luck to you..

Don't watch videos, you're torturing yourself!! I had mine taken out at 14 and I was totally fine. When I was in school for dental hygiene we watched in person and I was very happy that I already had it done because after seeing it I didn't want it either. It's some scary looking stuff! But the alternative is worse. The wisdom teeth need to come out because impacted teeth are bad news. If left in they would push into the teeth in front of them, causing damage, and crowd all of the teeth by moving them (trying to fit onto the jaw where there is no room).
I'd say you'll only need a week or two off from hockey. It is sore for about a week, the third day is the worst and it gets easier from there. Don't be too afraid, it's not as bad as it seems. The drugs are great! I was totally asleep, but woke up briefly mid-surgery. I was so messed up from the drugs that I wanted to watch - couldn't feel a thing! But I passed out again like right after. It's the only surgery I've ever had and it was really not that bad. When you get home, tell people to come visit you over the next few days and bring ice cream. Just follow all of your post-operative instructions and you'll be great!
If you're really scared going in, ask a friend or family member to come with you until you're drugged to help you relax a bit. Remember, these are professionals and they do this all the time, it's a totally normal procedure. You will be just fine! : )
Edit: Call the office before you go and ask if it is alright if you take Ativan beforehand. You need to double check with them to make sure that it won't have any affect on the drugs they give you there.

I need a gum graft on my front teeth, and I learned about that procedure from watching OZ on Showcase... you can guess my fear going under for the prep work. Three days afterwards I was off at the bar with friends playing pool. It's not as terrible as you think it's going to be.
You should call the surgeon and tell them any sort of medications you are on, so they can tell you what you can and cannot take. Do that right now so you have one less unknown.
For my work I was on the gas and semi-aware of what was going on. I didn't feel pain so much as a little pressure at some points. They'll prescribe you painkillers afterwards too in case you need them. I didn't, but it's a matter of how well you heal in general too. If you are a smoker, stop for the duration of healing, and cut back as best you can beforehand too. Smoking can slow healing.
It's not as terrifying after the fact, and the pain is a lot less than you would imagine. My buddy just had four wisdom teeth taken out and was fine after a few weeks. Another friend had them taken out in high school and he was okay within eight days... he was a little miserable for about two days afterwards but it wasn't unbearable.

Well, yes, it hurts more than braces, but unlike braces, the pain won't last for more than a few days, at a week at the maximum, and you'll get to eat plenty of goodies during that time - for my sister, the gum surgeon recommended ice cream :] You'll just have to eat softer more chewable foods that are easy on the teeth and gums. It'll feel sensitive and painful the first day, just like it does with any tooth pulled (but more intense since the wisdom teeth have quite long roots,) but it'll subside after a few days, don't worry. In the end your gums will be much better off having done the procedure! Be brave because you'll be ok!

You should call the dentist and ask them about your medicine just to be safe, but I don't think it would mess anything up. I had my first wisdom tooth out this past Good Friday, and I'm not very pain tolerant. After about a week it stopped hurting, without the painkillers. By the way, a lot of people get sick from the painkillers there prescribe, so I suggest just sticking with advil and Tylenol (that's what I took, 2 advil and one Tylenol). Don't be scared about the procedure, you'll be out so you won't feel anything and it will be ok. It will hurt after wards but as long as you take pills, ice, and eat soft foods for awhile it'll be fine.

You shouldn't be terrified of it. Try not to think about it. Its going to happen whether or not you worry about it so you might as well chill. Afterwords it hurts some, but painkillers will help. I don't think the Ativan will affect anything, but tell the surgeon anyways.

You will be fine. you won't feel a thing til you come out of it. It isn't as bad as your making it sound, your just nervous and don't know what to expect, I had both my bottom ones removed and they were huge about 1 and a half inches each, the doctor told me to take them home and show my kids. I did they were grossed out and I laughed, so I still had a sense of humor. Good Luck.

To be honest I will not tell you my experience because I don't want to freak you out. Let's just say I was never put out and my medication didn't kick in till after my teeth were out.
