URGENT! 2 months old kitten fallen from 8-9 feet height, NO VET for another hour, what to do?

Kitten just fallen from the roof, height about 8-9 feet. I immediately called our vet, he can't come (or I go to him) for about an hour (it's the distance...I live very far from everything).

What can I do until he comes (he's on his way right now)? Kitten doesn't seam hurt bad, his stomach is soft (I guess that excludes internal bleeding) seams no ribs are broken and it walks and climbing on it's bed himself...his back leg is bit stiff, doesn't seam broken either, just hurt (but no visible wound), but I wouldn't dare touching it much until vet is here.

Problem is, he breathe kinda strange...like some wheezing, time to time, then intervals of normal breathing and again and again. Also, some kinda of water (don't know how else to call it) comes out of his nose time to time, making him sneeze. It's completely clear, no blood or anything else, but makes me wonder, could it be a hurt lungs of spleen?

Nothing else as far as I can see.

While we waiting, any advice? I already warmed him up in his blanket and he's asleep (or look that way)...before he's fall asleep, his attention was normal, he fallowed my finger as he would any day, eyes reacting normally, just didn't try to catch it.

Any help, advice or idea of what it could be (so I can prepare mentally) would be appreciated...vet will be here in an hour (well, 50 min. now, I hope) so please, don't sugest vet.

If you can say anything of use, thanks in advance.

Update:

Kitten was checked by the vet...not good. Even there are no broken bones or visible wounds, even there's no internal bleeding (which is a big phew)…but vet thinks bleeding can occur later and that there can be a possibility of spleen or liver split/injury.

Unfortunately, there is no scanners or similar medical equipment around here (we live on and island, best thing we have here is x-rays...this vet is great man and we lucky to have him, but he's the only vet around here, which leaves no options (which makes me mad) :( )… in case of a liver or spleen damage, there's nothing to do, but to wait and hope that is not the case. It’s so hard to feel so restrained...I feel as I will go mad.

Vet gave me some meds to give him every six hours and kitten got two shots. He will get more tomorrow and in the next days, if everything goes well. But vet say night will be rough and probably, critical. So, please, we need your prays and your good thoughts.

Thank you all to stick with us so far.

Just keep an eye on him, you did the right thing by calling the vet asap after it happened, its clear you care very much for this little kitten. He is probably very sore, but may not be hurt seriously. I would just sit with him and keep him calm until the vet arrives. Don't let him play, or give him anything to eat. Just sit calmly with him until the vet gets there. Good luck, keep us up to date!!!

If you're anything like me, being "mentally prepared" is knowing the worst possible scenarios. Be prepared that the vet might want to take him back to the office for x-rays, so get the carrier ready.

You didn't mention how your kitten landed? Did he l and on his feet? The fluid and the wheezing would be possible if he cracked a rib. You wouldn't feel a cracked rib unless you were trained, but it can affect lung function and breathing. There could be some damage around the nasal area that would affect his breathing. Co-incidentally, he could have a kitty cold, which affected his balance/equilibrium, which is why he fell in the first place.

You are doing the right thing by keeping the kitten calm -- he no doubt had the wind knocked out of him big time. Now, YOU have to keep calm. Make a nice cup of tea, the vet should be turning into the drive in a few minutes.

    Good luck and stay calm.

ADDED: Thanks for the update....spleens can be removed and livers can heal. I will send good thoughts for your cat's complete recovery. In addition to your prayers, create a halo of clear white light of protection around your cat. Good luck, and I hope all is well.

I had a very similar incident happen with my 4 month old kitten. He was playing on our catwalk inside our house and fell off an 8 foot balcony onto the floor below. He sat there a little while, then got up and ran off. He seemed to be fine for 2 days, he ate, drank and used the bathroom fine. But after the 2 days he became lethargic and had a little bit of diarrhea. I took him to the vet and he ended up having a 105.3 degree temp. My vet said that the biggest thing you have to worry about when kittens fall a ways is blood clots forming in their lungs. Luckily my kittens lungs sounded fine, however the trauma from the fall caused him to have a high temp. due to the inflammation in his abdomen. I would monitor your kitten make sure he is eating, drinking, and most importantly pooping normally! If worse comes to worse just take your kitten in for an exam, the doctor can take a listen and feel and tell you if he finds anything.

Whatever you do, do not pick him up. Just lay him stretched out in a box, but don't squash him. Clear fluid from the nose or ears is a symptom of a fractured skull. But if your vet has checked him, its most likely just mucus so don't worry about that. Make sure he is warm, and if he cant move about, give him water with a baby medicine syringe to make sure he doesn't gat dehydrated. Set an alarm clock so you don't forget to give him the medicines throughout the night. And be sure to be quiet and calm around him, and don't touch him much. His body needs to recover, and being loud/touching him will distract his brain, which needs to be using all its energy to heal. That's why people are put into induced comas, so their brain has nothing to do but heal itself. If tonight is

critical, why isn't he staying at the vets? He will most likely get better, if the vet thought he was likely to die or was in pain, he would've told you and suggested euthanasia. I'll pray and hope for both of you xx

Stay with him and try to comfort him. And try to keep him calm.

I don't know of anything else you can do. Don't poke around at him, if he does have internal injuries there's nothing you can to help him until the vet's there and poking around at him could make things worse (I'm not trying to suggest that you've hurt him with what you did already, just trying to be cautious).

Can you talk to your vet while he's on the way? If so then give him another call and ask if there's anything you can do until he arrives. You need to be very careful trying anything because it would be easy to make the situation worse. If you get advice on here clear it with your vet before trying it. You can't know if someone on here is educated or not.

good luck! I hope he pulls through.

    If it helps..

I had a cat that was hit by a car which caused her diaphragm to split. Her internal organs had gone up into her lung cavity causing breathing problems. She survived with micro surgery after hours of waiting on the doorstep at night so fingers crossed your kitten will be all right. Keep it confined in a cat carrier or box in a warm quiet place as it will probably be in shock. Gently talk to it but try not to investigate or probe if no obvious broken bones as it might of broken its pelvis or elbows as cats do tend to land on their feet.

    All the best

keep him as comfortable as possible. try to keep him calm and keep reassuring him. and like the person above keep him warm so he doesn't go into shock.

if you have a carrier or something might be good to put him in there as it would restrict his movements until the vet gets there to check him out and give him the okay to be out and about too

    good luck

and awesome on being a responsible pet owner! you rock! and yes please keep us updated on his progress :)

I would confine him to a carrier till the vet gets there to check him out. Hopefully all is well and he's not hurt.
