Can viruses disable antivirus scanners?
I have been using Avira Classic for about two years, but recently it would stop scanning at between 8 and 12 %. I tried to fix it as recommended by Avira, but it didn't help.
I then tried a new scanner, Avast Personal. The same thing is happening; it freezes after 17% scanned. However, it does work when I schedule a start-up scan.
I don't know what to do. Both these products are highly rated.

Yes, they can not only disable security software but also change the hosts file to stop your anti virus being able to update. I am not too up to date with avira or avast although both are well known. To ensure it is clean I would run a combination of a couple of things, google for stinger - a free mcafee application, and run an online scan from either www.trendmicro.co.uk or www.kaspersky.co.uk both of these offer free online virus scans - kaspersky is very good.
Anti Virus is VERY fussy about the previous version of an AV product being removed before being replaced, I would recommend uninstall all anti virus products to start with and then reinstall from clean AFTER a reboot.

First of all, make sure you only have ONE virus scanner installed at any one time. They can fight with one another and cause some serious weird problems on your machine.
click Start > Run > and type appwiz.cpl then press enter. Remove any strange programs that indicate that they are rarely used, and remove all but one of your virus scan utilities. If you want to try a new virus scan utility, remove them all and download and install AVG from
Other things you can try. Make sure that you are receiving Windows Updates and reboot your computer before trying any of the above mentioned steps.
