The programs on my computer will not open, Do I have a virus?

On Wednesday April 22,2009, I got on my Dell personal computer, and saw that my Mcafee that secures my computer, was not working properly. It showed that my computer was not fully protected. My subscription is current, and isn't up until August 2009. Anyhow I click fix in the Mcafee Security center, and it would not fix the problem. So I went to the Mcafee website to get assistance from one of the Chat Representative, she told me to go to my account, and to download the virus protection that somehow wasn't working at the time. I did this, and the download wouldn't start it says until I uninstall the old Mcafee, so that it could download a new one. I followed what the directions was giving me, and it uninstalled my old one, it took a long time to uninstall. Anyhow It had me click restart to reboot the computer, When the computer restarted I saw no new installation, it did have a E as an icon and show Security center. When I clicked on it, it would not open, the old icon was Red for Mcafee, this one was different It was blue and white, and did not open. I got frustrated and decided to go to the start menu, to system restore to change it back to its original state. My system restore would not open, I then realized a lot of my programs would not open. I realized that most of all my programs were gone, Did I receive a Virus, or what, and how can I get my system restore to work again to remove the virus or this program? I even tried to go to Mcafee website and it will not open my account now, so that I can talk to someone, What is wrong? Need HelP!

It sounds like a Virus to me, allot of Viruses disable security software and the system restore process. You can try to boot the PC in safe mode (that is the F8 while the computer is starting) then pick safe mode. you may be able to start the system restore from that process. Also if you have a restore disc just pop the disc in your PC and restart the PC, if your bios boot order is set to boot from CD before HDD it should pick up the disc and ask you what to do.

There is also always computer repair (Ya I know, we all hate to spend money)

It as definitely a virus in the guise of a Mc Afee product. You supposedly downloaded the wrong Mc Afee or went to a phishing website.
