Why is not hitting your kids such a foreign concept to Americans?
US and Somalia are the only members of the UN that have not signed the Convention on the Rights of the Child.

What? I'm not supposed to smack them around a little?
Source(s): Ike Turner quote... lol OKay, on a more serious note... the US smacks around everyone and our children are no exception. It's a power and control issue, and many of our citizens have not yet figured out that there are better ways to handle difficulties than with hitting someone (literally and figuatively). - ?Lv 45 years ago
God is not a man nor a son of man (Numbers 23:19, Hosea 11:9) "they shall beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks and none shall learn war any longer" (Isaiah 2:4) If Jesus existed he was a man executed by the Roman government There is no indicia at all that he fulfilled any Prophesies to make him the Messiah of the Jewish Bible and there is certainly nothing about the events of the time that would indicate that God would so thoroughly transform the nature of life as he described to Moses and all of the previous prophets as to come into the world as a human being. People who have a modicum of respect and culture can distinguish between different religions and cultures and do not try to play at being what they are not. You are a Christian -- Geszunte Heit. Believe that Jesus was a God - worship Jesus as a God You want to prostelyze -- enjoy -- tell people about your wonderful religion Don't be a d!ck and tell people that Judaism allows the worship of Jesus as part of Judaism. Regarding the original Jewish followers of Jesus -- the New Testament you now have was edited and completed by Greeks and Romans Paul was a Roman who pretended to Jewishness with no concept of what Jewishness was somehow he edged out both Jesus' brother and those Jews who were then part of the church. The New Testament is full of anti-Jewish caricatures. There is nothing Jewish of the New Testament except lip service to the stories. The theology of the god who becomes a person is a Roman and Greek one - the theology of human sacrifice to attone for the sins of others is a non-Jewish one. You have no clue or evidence what the Jews who followed Jesus believed. The modern Jews-for-Jesus is a Protestant group that follows the same Roman New Testament and then adds fake Jewish flourishes. This is all bunk

That is not why the US has not done it. I thought they had signed it but not ratified it anyway. Semantics I suppose.
The opposition is because some religious group feels that it takes away parental rights. Okay I took the time to find this thing and read it. I don't see how it would take away the rights of parents. It doesn't even mention corporal punishment and basically ensures you can't treat your children like slaves and states they have the right to life and etc.
Why are religious groups allowed to dictate US policy? Unbelievable.
Edit: Obama liar, you make a good valid point, groups should not be allowed to dictate US policy.
Spanking your child is reprehensible, if you were a halfway competent parent you would have been instilling in that child since birth the correct and acceptable behavior. You don't have to hit a child to make him listen to you.

Actually I just scanned oner it and it does not specify spanking as abuse.
For the most part the document is a good basis to go of in regards to the welfare, rights and education of both parents and children.
On a flip side maybe the US is reluctant t sign it because we don't want to become like Canada where recently a child took her father to court and won. Her father grounded her for posting nasty pics of herself on line and going into adult chat rooms and the poor baby wasn't going to be allowed to go on a sixth grade trip. The court stated it was too harsh punishment.
While I agree that every child has certain rights I sure the hell don't want the courts to interfere with my right to ground my own kid.

Hitting is not the answer. It teaches kids that violence is the answer.
But why do we do it?
Could it be that we have to work 2-3 jobs to put food on the table? Are we stressed for time? Do we not have time to enjoy our kids? Time is limited to "teach" our kids right from wrong in better ways then striking them.
But when you're tired, have no time for family, the easiest way is to give them a smack.
We have to learn that working ourselves to death isn't the answer to living.
I'm tired of people saying you have to work 24-7. If we don't make the time for family then this is what you get.

* Discipline comes from the heart.
* Let parents use their hearts (not hands or sharp, hurting tongues) to make the kids understand and follow what's right and good.
* As an old man with three grown up children + two grandchildren, and as a teacher for forty years, I'm talking out of experience.

Spankings are barbarism. I'm supposed to hit my little girl so she knows how to behave, but she's not supposed to think her husband should? The obvious psychological disparity here is lost on the common redneck. It's the same thing with letting a child "cry it out". I wouldn't ignore an adult in his/her room crying. Maybe this is part of the reason people in the US tend to seek solace in material goods rather than other people.

I am sorry, but sometimes if all else fails, a little spanking is deserved. What I find funny is how come with more rights for children the children in the United States is more spoiled then ever and there is more discipline problems then ever. I have met people ruined for life because a child claimed that they were molested then years later said that they lied because they were upset with the person.
Also, just because other nations sign a piece of paper doesn't mean that they are following it.

Simply put, because we are taught that its a legitimate form of teaching by our parents.

A Spanking is not in any way shape or form harmful to a child. I can't believe I have to explain this ..A Spanking is not an attack.
It's intent is for my child to identify a boundary he has broken, it is a few swats, and it is followed by a hug and an explanation about what boundary was broken and why that was not allowed.
It is only used after the child has already been previously informed about the bad behavior and never in anger.
For those of you that do not spank I have to wonder that when your child is a teen, if the teen is out of control. For those of you that abuse and "beat" well please just don't hit at all.
For all, remember these kids love you and expect you to guide them (yes, sometimes painfully) .
