Nitrogen. pure and simple! Nitrogen is the nutrient that plants use to synthesize clorophyl, the "green" that is visible in plants. Spread fertilizer with a high nitrogen content (the first number in the analysis of the fertilizer) and water well. an example might be something like 28-3-8.

Spread it with a good quality fertilizer & lightly top dress it with a good soil then water it daily for a week or more. By top dress I mean spread the soil over the grass (after fertilizer) & rake it through so the grass is still visible IE; don't bury the grass. It is also good practice to spread it with grass seed with the fertilizer to fill in the gaps. Regular mowing & watering will keep it healthy & reduce weeds.

Try making a compost pile. My daughter mixes soil , water , little pieces of leaves , pieces of twigs , used coffee beans [of course without the filter] ,cut pieces of the pieces of foods we don't eat [such as the core of an apple , banana peels ,orange peels] and just to make it better sprinkle some fertilizer .
