Do poodle mixes shed?

I love poodles for their attitude, but more because they don't shed. My hubby is against having any pets in the house that shed, and I'm the one who has to clean it anyway. So I'm limited in the types of dogs I can get.... however, since I want to adopt from a shelter, I'm sure that there will not be any pure breed poodle puppies, or they will be few and far between. So I was wondering.... do poodle mixes also have this great non-shedding quality? Puggles, golden doodles, etc....

Update:

Oh, I always assumed Puggles was a pug and poodle hehe, never looked into it. I guess it's a beagle and pug, my bad! I was just trying to list a few random examples... I'd actually prefer a very small dog so labradoodles and such are out of the question anyway.

And... as far as I know poodles and portuguese water dogs, and a few others are supposed to be hypoallergenic, and they don't shed. At least not noticibly... I've had a poodle before.

Update 2:

Just a side note, I've had dogs that shed before, when I fostered dogs from the shelter they were all dogs that shed A LOT. My hubby just doesn't like it, and I don't like vacuuming every day. I don't mind if it's slight.

& I know that hypoallergenic has nothing to do with shedding, although all the dogs I've heard of that are hypoallergenic also happen not to shed, I specifically mentioned it seperately though because I am aware. I am not allergic though, so it isn't an issue.

Poodles do shed, but very very little (you won't notice it.) They do have one 'true' shed in their lifetime, from the puppy wool to adult wool, my girl was aprox. 6 months when that happened. Even then, it's gradual, and since it's wool, its easy to pill and remove.

if you are after a mix, then it's a bit of a gamble - i've known some mixes, a labradoodle in particular, to have half his body normal moulting hair, and the other half wool. in others, its all mixed through, or they get lucky and have pure hair or pure wool.

i'd personally look for a place like a poodle rescue socitey - here are a couple of links.

Stalkers are cowardly thieves is actually somewhat correct. All dogs do shed though yes, some breeds are known for shedding less than others (poodles being one of these).

He's also right that golden retrievers are known for shedding, as are pugs and beagles. Since the 'breeders' of these "designer" mixes (they are just mutts, by the way) can never really guess which breed's features will more prominent, there's a very good chance you could have a 'goldendoodle' (yuck! i hate even typing that out) that sheds more than you expect. Again, pugs and beagles are both known shedders so I doubt you'd have much luck with that mix.

And your assumption about no pure breed poodle puppies may not be correct. A LARGE number of purebreed dogs come through shelters/rescues. If you're wanting a puppy, it may be more true since there are more adults in rescue, but adopting an adult is often a great way to go.

Actually there are a quite a few poodles in Poodle rescue or contact Poodle breed club for adopting one. There are some puppies but either older or not often & they do have mixes as well. It is easier to adopt an older puppy that has already been thru the terrible chewing stage - I will never adopt another young puppy.

All dogs shed even hairless breeds which actually are not completely hairless. Poodles shed except their hair gets caught in their coat instead of falling on the ground which is why those type of breeds are high maintenance for grooming to keep mat free. So be sure to factor in the cost of regular grooming appts for poodles or mixes.

Anything mixed with a poodle (or any other breed) is a crap shoot. It's a mutt and you never know what you will end up with.

You could get a toy or miniature Poodle, a Hairless Terrier, or just go to a shelter and find a "miniature labradoodle", lmao! If you want a mutt, theres a great one for you. It is smaller than a Lab but...being mixed with a Lab you are 90% certain to have shedding.

You know allergies are not caused by dog hair but rather from the saliva and dander, right?

I own a maltese x poodle that doesn't shed. He hair is so soft and fine that a shaver goes straight threw it without pulling a single hair out. We have to cut he hair with scissors instead.

Before her we had a poodle x chihuahua that was the same and our family friends have a spaniel x poodle that doesn't shed. Anyway what i'm saying is i've never know a poodle cross to shed or if it did it was completely unnoticeable.

My dads allergic so we also wanted a non shedding dog. We didn't like the look of a purebred poodle so we went for a cross. If your adopting from a shelter they will easily be able to tell you if the dog you want sheds. The shelter or foster carer will have noticed as they will have spent a great deal of time with it. Its also great to know you want to rescue a dog!

Good luck with hopefully getting you knew pet!

Poodles DO shed, they just shed minimal amounts.

There's no guarantees with mixes.. very few of them get the poodle coat.. most have an in-between coat that sheds and matts.

heh REAL puggles are actually baby Echidnas.. dog "puggles" are pug/beagle mixes.. both of which shed quite a bit.

If you like the poodle, why not just adopt another poodle? You can find one thru a shelter or rescue www.petfinder.com

A "puggle" is a pug and a beagle mix, not a poodle mix.

And YES poo mixes shed, and their hair is terrible. You still have to get them groomed professionally, just like a purebred poodle, but the hair quality is so poor that they mat like crazy.

Here is the poodle club of america's rescue page: http://www.poodleclubofamerica.org/rescue.htm You can adopt from there.

"Puggles" despite them also being baby echidna's are not even mixed with poodles so I fail to see why they were mentioned.

    ALL DOGS SHED

And furthermore NONE of these mutts are guaranteed to be "low shed" why? Because Golden Retrievers are a HIGH shedding bred, Poodles are a low shedding breed. Mixing them together does not magically create a dog that does not shed. Genetics don't work that way. You could end up with a stupid named "Goldendoodle" or what have you, that sheds just like a real breed
