Why would a buck have antlers in the spring?

While driving Saturday morning I was almost hit by a buck in the road. An aggressive one at that. It turned and acted as if it was going to charge the car. Not in the least afraid. What got my attention the most (after the 'mild' panic of almost hitting a deer) is that it's antlers were huge. Beyond any that I've ever seen before. It was only later that I found out that they're not suppose to have antlers right now. So I'm wondering if there's any reason for it. I've suggested rabies after it's odd behavior (jokingly of course) but now I'm not so sure. Any ideas?

There are instances of does having antlers. When they do, they are never shed. Also a buck that has some sort of problem with hormones or injury will keep horns but they are usually in velvet all year. but no matter what, you saw a rare sight!
