Would you remove a friend from your facebook friends list if they asked you this?

If someone sent you a message pivately on facebook asking you 'if you don't consider me to be a real friend anymore and don't want to hear from me could you remove me from your friends list' (or words along those lines) Would you remove them if you didn't want to be friends with them anymore?

Im in a weird situation with an old friend of mine (who has ignored me for some months but might have a reason nothing to do with me as such) and I don't know where I stand with this person. I thought I might take this approach but haven't yet.

We were friends in real life not just facebook 'friends'.

Update:

I have tried to resolve it but its not worked. This persons ignoring me so as of yet they we haven't had contact in real life as they won't meet up. Ive got to the stage where I can't be bothered to try and resolve it anymore and thought this might be the quick solution.

I'm afraid I wouldn't advise asking this question via facebook at all. Not a good way to do it and if there was nothing wrong before, there will be after sending such a message. Better off trying to make personal contact and asking if things are ok or if you have offended her/him in some way and then trying to patch it up. Best of luck.

    You have two choices:

    1. Try to resolve your difficulties by Facebook messaging. That gives you both time to think about your approach and can be really good for avoiding blazing rows. If you think your old friendship may be worth saving, this is a good path.

    2. Take this person at their word and delete them from your friend list. This clearly denotes the end of your friendship, though, as the other person has basically said as much. If you feel they are no longer worth your time, this is the way to go.

Don't delete them! They might just need attention/be lashing out a bit because they're feeling like they have no real friends.. you should really call or visit them and see what's up? :/
