feeding a stray cat? illegal? please read?
There's this cat who lives in this bush across the street from my house, he's been out a long time because ive been feeding him since about Dec, and I used to see him around a lot before i started feeding him.
I'm planning on taking him in once i earn more of his trust, which is coming along really good :)
So anyways, there's this other cat who hang out with him a lot, and this cat lives two doors up from me.
The woman who owns the one cat next door came out today while i was feeding the other stray one and started biching at me about feeding the stray cat, and that her cat's on a fixed diet so "if i get a big vet bil..." is what she said.
I told her that i only feed the one, and that hers never ever eats the food.
And so what she was basically saying was that if her cat eats something other then his prescribed food, and she gets a vet bill, that it'll be my fault. She said it in a threatening manor too,
At the time I didn't think to say it but, shouldn't her cat be on a leash anyways??? If you don't want your cat eating anything other then the food YOU buy him, keep him in your damn yard.
what do you guys think about it....
There's no way I can get into any trouble for feeding a stray cat is there?

She gave up all rights to determine what her cat eats when she let it out of the house. Just ignore her. I'm sure her cat is eating worse things than what you are putting out. Her cats health is no concern or obligation of yours.

I doubt it's illegal. If her cat is on such a fixed diet it's ridiculous for her to let him out at all. Goodness knows what he could eat outside besides cat food.
I know that where I live it's illegal to feed actual wild animals (that's probably true everywhere), but feral cats and stray cats aren't considered to be wild animals. You could look into your area's laws to be sure.
Just try to get your kitty inside with you as soon as you can. Some people are just devoid of logic and rude, it's best to avoid them when you can. It's also much easier to tame a cat once it's in. Catch him, drag him to the vet, then make him adjust. I have several kitties I brought in from outside. I tried with one to get him to like me first, but after a month he was still terrified so I just grabbed him. As poorly planned as it was, it actually worked out really well.
Good luck, sorry you have a crazy neighbor.

Cats don't adhere to a leash law. That being said, there is no way she is keeping an outside cat on any kind of diet. Cats are predatory and when allowed to do so will eat things they find in the wild.

By all means, feed that stray cat! You are doing a wonderful thing, and hopefully you'll get to take him in soon. And as for that mean lady, tell her to back off. She's responsible for her cat. Therefore she should watch her cat and what she eats or does if she's that concerned.

Stray cat=belongs to no one
You can feed it, of course. Just don't feed your neighbor's cat.
If you leave out food to the stray, the neighbor's cat might eat it. So, what's easier is where you wait for the stray cat to come, leave food a distance away from you, and wait till it approaches it, you can walk slowly forward and pet it to create a bond so you can make sure the stray cat eats all its food.
***Also, point out to your neighbor that stray cats carry diseases to house cats, fleas and many more. She'll have to remove her cat from the stray.

If her cat is on a fixed diet then he shouldn't be outside. ANytime the cat is outside and not in her supervision you can't be held responsible IMO for what the cat does while it isn't in her house- if she knows the cat will get sick and lets it out anyway that's her own fault.
She's just trying to bully you- don't fall for it.

There is no leash law for cats, but whatever you do on your property is your business. Even if the cat gets sick, it's your property and your right to put out food and she needs to control her animal.
You should get a humane trap and trap your cat so you can take him inside. They don't hurt the cat at all and you can borrow them from the humane society.

No, i see no way that you would have to pay ANY of her vet bills
Yes there is a law to keep cats and dogs on a leash or be with them at ALL times

here is a link about stray cats
you should read it
also find out about laws in your city, are people allowed to let cats off their property or not (meaning the neighbour) you can respond by saying "if you dont want your cat eating this food, keep it on your property)..
